"The Fountain" on Radio Merseyside

Postby marco » Sun Sep 27, 2009 6:46 pm

Mac was supposed to be on "The Pool with Dave Monks" today, but this has been pushed out until next Sunday according to Dave. But he did play the song "The Fountain" on the air. You can listen here:

Fast forward to 0:24:35 to cut right to the song

I like the intro, then the song goes to shit. The mix is horrible, the music is buried under some pretty bad sounding vocals by Ian. I also thought there'd be more to this song based on the acoustic version, but there is nothing interesting at all in this song outside the cool little riff at the beginning. No Will guitar solo.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm about ready to give up on these guys. It seems like Will already has given up trying to give his input into the Bunnymen and if that's the case then it's not really the Bunnymen anymore.

Ian has pretty much ruined the Bunnymen. This album still might have a few really good songs on it, but I've already heard almost half the album now and only really like 1 song.

Guess I wasn't the only person to tune in last night... The riff is quite cool. But the ending is awful with its "Hallelujah!" bit. Sounds like an American preacher. The acoustic version is a nice tidy album filler that would have sounded better maybe with an orchestral arrangement and Will's magic guitar stardust added to it. Didn't Mac supposedly re-record the vocals on this?

Proxy, Think I Need It Too, The Fountain, Drivetime... that's now nearly half of what sounds like an extremely poor album so far that makes Flowers sound like a masterpiece.

I just bought November, at least that is pretty good compared to the other ones. Little base line starting the song off. And it sounds like a Bunnymen song. Will's guitar is still at the back of the mix though.

When I listened to it I knew right away most of you guys wouldn't like it. It's definitely more of an Ian solo song. I don't think his voice sounds like shit.

I like the guitar riff at the beginning and throughout the verse (but it's hard to even hear it because Ian's vocals are too loud in the mix), but the rest of the song I'm not a fan of at all, and it seems to get worse as it progresses. The lyrics are pretty decent.

Based on the acoustic version, I thought the song had a lot of potential.

What acoustic version are you guys referring to? This was the first time I heard the song.

Wow, I guess I missed a lot the first several months of this year while I was taking my license exams! Thanks for showing me that!

I just realized on the chorus (?) that Will's recycling a guitar riff off Make Me Shine. It was hard to hear since it was so back in the mix, but it's there.

New songs of course but not songs that are clearly written by just one guy. That's a solo album, not a Bunnymen album.
