Enlighten Me VS. Bedbugs and BBC6 review Think I Need It Too

Well XFM seems to like it. I heard the song a second time yesterday and once today.

No resemblance. I much prefer Bedbugs to Enlighten Me. Those of you who had sinful thoughts thinking Noel Burke might have done a better job than Ian, well get down on your knees again...

He was a pretty good bassist for the band, but I'm not sure anyone even knows who the hell he is.

just as nobody knows who les pattinson is, or mac for that matter. i bet theres people on this forum who dont even know whp the current bass player is. would anybody guess that the cocteaus even had a bass player, i mean theres the bird with the funny voice wh makes up words and the bloke with the shimmering guitars, but what else is going on, oh yeah, drum machine on the early stuff.

4 out of 10 might be a little harsh,

i only caught the second half of the program and 4 seems quite generous. tjinder singh (from cornershop for all you dudes who justst aren't up with it, yeah) was handing out zeros amd simon raymonde was pretty harsh about alot of stuff - only the cribs seemed to be popular with everyone. Raymonde also admitted to never liking or listening to the the smiths just because one of them was a bit rude about the cocteaus. which makes hinm fairly normal if you ask me. oh youre not? oh dear.

No I don't think it has any resemblence to Bedbugs & Ballyhoo.

I finally got to hear Reverberation in its full entirety the other day. Not bad an album at all. It kind of has the Bunnymen vibe in terms of the instrumental sound, but the songs sound different. Couple on there, Flaming Red and Freaks Dwell particularly that would now been regarded as Bunnymen classics if Mac had still be in the band.

the whole of side two is brilliant if you ask me though youre right about the general vibe thing. once again i think they picked the wrong singles though. and that one (somewhere on side one) about the wife beater is awful.

I thought that was a very fair review from Raymonde actually. If you don't like it you don't like it, why lie? And he admitted he loved them back in the day and said the last time he saw them was tremendous...

Actually they got off lightly, partly because I don't think the U2 comparisons are particularly apt anymore, (even tho' the "sounds like a cool U2" was a funny line) partly because everyone hated everything else with much more venom, OR liked things that were a bit crap...

And the most damning line was the "is liking the Bunnymen a generational thing" line, which must really stick in their craw. But they will never get away from that now. I mean, I'll go and see Faust or Pere Ubu if they're touring but I don't think I could bother getting all the Faust or Pere Ubu or Klaus Schultze or Michael Rother records outside of the classic releases and the odd new/interesting LP of theirs I've picked up now and again. Doesn't stop me raving about them as people who have produced astonishing music throughout their careers..



Think I Need it Too could be a really great instrumental.

I also think it could be a good selling single for them

From the minute I heard Think I Need A Poo i knew it was the final nail in the coffin following the previous final nail in the coffin that was Stormy weather and the other previous nail in the coffin that was most of Flowers.

In fact the coffin is now so full of nails it resembles some sort of oblong hedgehog but with the spikes on the inside (pretty uncomfortable for the corpse).

There is clearly a generational thing now, mixed between the higher number of fans of the band in the 80s and to a lesser extent, some of those who got into them post-1997. Since then, any younger fans probably would have been picked up on them possibly through stumbling upon their 80s stuff.

That'll be me. I haven't a bloody clue. Is it still Peter Wilkinson? I gave up trying to find out who the session musicians were after Flowers. The only one I would recognise if I saw him in the street is the hoppy, dancing one on the guitar. Gordie is he?

just listened to the podcast of that bb6 show. i'd say they were quite polite compared to some of the stuff i heard last night and as lancs said a fair review from raymonde - echoing some of the sadness often expressed by scouser on this forum - yes he's a first four albums man. and cornershop bloke gave it 6.5, v generous compared to some of the other stuff. there was something very rude said about weezer.

I listened to the podcast and Raymonde wasn't really that rude, he just told it like it was, ie, the band are just going through the motions, making a living, etc. which is fine by him. Listening to him say that though made me realize that Will really probably doesn't give much of a fuck anymore and has pretty much handed the keys over to Mac...He also gave the song a 5/10, the lady gave it a 4/10.

They were harsh on Weezer, as they should be, their recent stuff is awful.

I don't think a lot of people know the name of the bassist for the Bunnymen, either, and one reason why is he's just a hired hand. One big problem I have with the recent Bunnymen albums is the mix is way off on a lot of songs where it's Mac's voice way up in the mix, with Will's guitar sprinkled in here and there and the bass is hardly ever heard. Even in I Think I Need It Too, there's a cool bass riff going through the verse, but you can hardly hear it. Just another reason why some of the new stuff is boring.

his stuff on theis mortal coil's 'it'll end in tears' is amongst the best on the album

I didn't think he was rude. He just wasn't flattering and it was perhaps enlightening to see how some of those within the music industry, an owner of a record label who is offered an album for possible release, see the Bunnymen in the grand scheme of things. I thought it was just some of us that saw it that way. Maybe a dose of reality who still think the band in their present form and way of doing things are still the bee's knees.

No idea. I haven't seen any website actually offer it or announce that it will be available to buy upon release (not that I am buying Think I Need it Too, but it'd be nice to see a cover and maybe track listings -- any new b-sides on there or just rehashed instrumentals/live stuff?). Hope it is not just buyable via the Bunnymen website using paypal or as a digital download via i-tunes and the like, especially when I thought Warners were supposed to be doing the distribution for overseas.
