As someone who only got into the Bunnymen after 1997 -- therefore only knowing changing session musicians, departure of one original band member (who I was only able to see on stage with Mac and Will once), chicken in the basket McTwanky tours etc, I rephrase personally:

I would have never gone all the way to Liverpool to watch a Bunnymen gig. But I decided to give this year's tour a miss (nearest venue The Roundhouse) and the last one in 2005 (Shepherds Bush) for that very reason.

How far is Liverpool from 'limbo'?

I saw EATB at All Points West. I'm going to see them in LA. I bought a ticket to the December 18th show when they first went on sale, with the understanding that the chances of me actually going were pretty slim. My belief was that Will and Ian would be playing on their home turf, to their Liverpool homies, and would therefore put on a performance unlike any other, reinvigorated and expanding the set list to include songs not often played. I still have not ruled out the possibility of going, but the cost of getting there and back (in time and money) is preventing me from making a commitment. Some people think I'm crazy if I go. Others are urging me on.

Does someone have an honest assessment of what I may expect if I find myself in the audience that night? Worth it? Does not sound like it based on statements in this discussion topic. Once I make a commitment, I then face the difficult task of telling my wife what I'm planning to do!

well, recent liverpool setlists are pretty much what you might expect - all the usual with a few odd ones thrown in - though youre not going to get all hands, fuel or rack and pinion steering (not been played since 1980 wulfrun hall). cant vouch for the accuracy of these as i've lifted most of it from Kristin F Smith's labour of very strange love that is the bunnymen concert log: http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/setlists/index.html. not sure where the 2007 one came from and its not in order.

The rest is whether the band, you and obviously the rest of the audience are up for it. Been a couple of times and once was OK the other, merely OK. cant be arsed any more and anyway they are playng local just before. The other year when they did two wabbit on the other forum (shaz on seven seas) said the two nights were quite different - main setlist the same but with different 'other stuff' thrown in that made the atmosphere quite contrasting. As i said i cant be arsed going all the way to liverpool just for a gig any more so the idea that you foreigners are willing to travel half way around the world i find quite bizarre. madness even. but, whatever floats your boat. on the plus you'd also get to meet several hundred/thousand cheeky scallies and see at first hand the lovely girls of liverpool. thats probably worth the air fair alone.

oh and you will get the band standing in a line across the stage, silhouetted as per usual, mac moaning about the lights/ his monitor/anything else that gets on his nerves. you may well be able to scoot along to wherever Will may be playing records til the early hours of the morning and pretend that he's your mate. mac, obviously, wont be there. but if you run into him i'm assured that he's quite sensitive (unles you're using his personal toilet without prior permission - see glasgow). and since you use this board you might want to take the precaution of wearing a false moustache and an overcoat so the management dont recognise you. er... thats it.
