I guess I'm in the minority here, but I love that album. The drumming especially, Boris was not slouch by any means, but Andy Anderson remains my favorite Cure drummer. I think I like that album so much b/c it's so different from everything that came before or after. But sounds like most of you feel that "different" means crap in this case hahaha. Oh well, I somehow always end up rooting for the underdog.

Japanese Whispers was just a singles & b-sides compilation, not a proper album.

This holds a special place in my heart as well. Not b/c it's a good album (was meant only for the Japanese market, hence the name, but the record co. got greedy and released it worldwide) but b/c it was my introduction to The Cure. My friend's older sister dubbed me a copy of her LP (kids today won't be able to say or understand such archaic lingo) and I wore that tape out. Still worth it for Let's Go to Bed and Lament.

As a side not, my friend's band Veil Veil Vanish did a very cool cover of the "Upstairs Room" that was recently on a tribute album. You can hear it on their myspace page:

Pornography was my intro. When I found out about Head On The Door and Standing On The Beach, I was impressed the band could cover both brooding music and incredibly catchy pop songs. I always felt Head On The Door was one of the most complete albums ever made. Each track stands on its own as a solid pop single.

i know...., i always thought they should have had warnings on the sleeves for all the kids who had only heard love cats or whatever was the latest catchy single, just in case they listened to the album when any sharp knives were within reach. one reason i like bloodflowers is the total lack of light relief. not that i dislike the singles, they are great but if I',m i need of some bad mood music and theres no joy divisio to hand i know where to go. the singles collections are one of the few of my albums I'm ever allowed to put on in the car when the kids are with me and i get told off for singing along as 'it doesn't suit my voice'. kids eh. my nipper finds that fairly recent single 'wrong number' hillarious - you know the bit at the end - sorry, wrong number.

Fairly recent? Time flies. That was 1997. Remember 1997? Les was in the band in 1997, and the Bunnymen's second dead drummer was still alive. Waitaminute, waitaminute! Are Echo and the Bunnymen actually Spinal Tap?

though intro wise disintegration was the first actual album i bought - yet another example of me starting to listen to a band ten years after all the cool and groovy kids - though I was nearly thirty at the time. always reminds me of my first sprog being born. not that the missus would have let me listen to it while she was within a ten mile radius (writing on the wall there) but as i did the mad dash across the rain drenched city - she was already in the labour room, midwife sent me home to eat/rest as there was 'probably some time to go' (and/or get me out of thew way, you know how it is), anyway as soon as i got home the phone rang to say get your arse back here if you want to join the fun - anway the first thing i put my hand on was a tape of disintegration and the first two or three songs just take me back (i know, standing on the edge of the world and all that, how appropriate, or not).

how terrible quaint, to think of time in terms of years. ok ok, its one of the ones at the end of the singles compilation i happen to own, so in relative terms e.g., boys dont cry. it came with a spare cd with accoustic versions on, which for some reason i have never had the urge to listen to.

Agreed. Having a dark album and then a song like Friday I 'm In Love pop up is annoying. I am not a big Peter Gabriel fan but I like him well enough. Big Time destroyed the continuity of So for me. Now with cd burns it is not such a big deal, I guess. Make a copy and leave off the track.

Gallup's bass is the glue in the Cure.

i once went out with a woman - fairly recently this - and when i say fairly recently I'd say in terms of not long after Flowers came out (see what i did there frank?) - partly because she knew who simon gallup was. cant remember how the conversation came about but she also claimed to have a picture of her with him. she didn't give the impression of being a cure fan but you know, i was imnpressed that she would know details such as the name of a bass player (sorry all you bass players out therem but you know how it is) small things can turn an old gits head, specially when he hasn't had any sex for a couple of albums (see what i did there frank). anyway, it didn't work out, i guess its not a basis for a long and fruitful relationship. Obviously i wouldn't want youi to think my online dating addy lists twenty questions on who are the bass players in various bands, though, after the disasters i've had it might be a good thing. should i need it in the future, i may give it a go.

Boys Don't Cry was the first cassette I ever bought. It was summer vacation between 5th and 6th grade and The Cure became my second musical obsession after Prince. I've since hopped off the purple bus but I'm still down for The Cure. As of The Curiosa tour they were still a great live unit. It was an amazing show despite the festival type setting. One thing that made it special was seeing the look on my sister in law's face. Robert came out to look at the audience and smile and she had never seen him in person before and she lit up and giggled liked a 12 year old school girl. We don't agree on much but we were both on the same page that night.
