I'm waiting for snippets from "Everlasting" before passing judgment.

Jack? Do you still have the lyrics?

The poll wasn't about whether or not you'll like the full songs once you've heard them.
The title of the poll was "Do you lkie what you hear so far"

Personally, I don't lkie what I hear so far.
But then again, I don't even know what 'lkie' means.

Presumably the band intends for some sort of judging to result from these clips, otherwise what's the point? It's just that they are hoping for the judgement to be positive.

I thought they posted them to prove the songs exist.

I don't mind what I've heard.

I'm looking forward to hearing the full length versions.

Do you think they have a worldwide distribution thing or will we have to order from the UK?

I really wish they had full-length versions up to allay any fears. I just can't believe how bad Ian's lyrics are on those songs along with the stupid backing vocals. Whoever said that it takes away from the songs is completely right although I think they might completely ruin the songs.

The good news is we haven't even heard half the album yet and the music on those songs, outside of Proxy, sounds pretty good. From what I've heard, Forgotten Fields is definitely the best song on the album so far, IMO. Also, Drivetime sounds like an Evergreen song but with a faster tempo.

I hope that's not the complete album on there withahip. I don't think I could stoop to downloading any unreleased album illegally, however much I dislike the snippets that I have heard.

I think you are missing the point. Trying to build fan hype for albums is pointless in this day and age.
As a friend who used to work at a local record shop said, "I'd get emails with new songs from bands weeks before the cd came out."

And I don't know if it is or not. I am the kind of schlepp that shells out over 40 dollars for an OR Limited Edition CD/DVD that never arrives. And then find out I could download it for $6.

Perhaps we are just suckers for the Bunnymen wheel of spin. Maybe it didn't help having such a huge delay for the release of the album (not necessarily of the band's making) that built up expectations that shouldn't have really been built up given the form was still there with Siberia: having bland moments (Parthenon Drive, What If I Am? for example) taking the edge out of an album still with a few good tunes.

To think that I first heard the recorded version of "Think I Need It Too" something like two years ago. I have never liked the song that much but I know the lyrics off by heart even before it's released. Now that is weird.

I doubt those torrents are legit, you have to pay to get access to their site, which means it's highly likely bullshit. I'd download it, though, if it were legit just to hear the album, it's been over 2 years, but I'd still buy the album. I bought the Japanese import of Siberia before it came out in the US and payed a pretty penny for it. I still remember what a nightmare it was to find a website to buy it from. I can't read Japanese!

I agree with withahip, an album is normally only successful commercially if it's marketed like crazy. That's not happening with this album. Don't most bands make money on touring and not on album sales anyways?

The bottomline is this album is not going to be a huge success. People under 30 are not going to buy this album (and I'm assuming those are the people that decide which albums are huge successes), especially with some of the horrible, cliched lyrics on the few samples available and other, younger bands out there to listen to.

When we were at the bar in NYC before the OR gig the bar staff asked what band we were there to see. When we said, "Echo and the Bunnymen" we got blank stares and scrunched up faces in reply.

BTW - Don't download that link. I don't know what it is. I just think it is interesting that
A. it is out there
B. it is the only torrent site among so many that has it

No band is making money from actual cd sales these days.

Bargain Bin

Postby redgumball » Wed Jul 22, 2009 12:42 am

I didn't vote -- cause I couldn't find the option "Used Bargain Bin"

1). If you are going to post clips -- make sure they're good enough so you can sell albums. Put your best foot forward -- they missed on the chance.

2). The delay speaks for itself. My guess is Will ended up sacking in or losing a bet, hence why we're seeing something now.

3). Geriatrics - some might call it dimensia, others may say Mac is killing it off proper.

4). Makes even the worst Bunnymen album (votes?) sound like a gold record.

5). I would recommend giving this one away for free, to help drive PR, invite new audiences. It worked for Radiohead, NIN and some others -- they can then get to work on a money-making mega album that blows the virtual doors off of this place! Download only to drive leads and registrations for ticket info and tour stops.

6). Time to invite Less back, to curb any meglomania.

7). Playing with an orchestra was a blessing and a curse. It softened them up like putty. Would fit nicely in my mom's collection next to Whitney Houston, The Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, and The Housemartins.

8). Tell me there are 5 other GREAT songs on "The Fountain" that make me eat all my Bunnymen hats, pins, posters and clothing.

9). CD single -- B-sides (Thanks to the clips, I think we just heard them...)

10). Bitch, Bitch, Bitch....

I had a look at the torrent link, the only one you can access without paying for the privilege is actually an old Bunnymen compilation labelled up as The Fountain!! The sad thing is it's almost certainly a better bet than The Fountain itself.

Playing 30 second snippets doesn't work anymore unless it is a MASSIVE band guaranteed to sell bucket loads of CDs where it can be used as a cheeky marketing gimmick, largely to irritate their fans. It doesn't give anyone a clear idea about the songs. Even the likes of Coldplay and U2 have dumped that and gone straight to pre-streaming their whole albums in the weeks leading up to release.

In my mind, the best way to go is starting off by streaming the whole single and any b-sides on myspace and then following it up later by streaming the whole album from start to finish. The best one I've seen so far is Regina Spektor's Far where her whole album was streamed via her website and then it was followed up with some marketing tie-up with The Times advertising it online as if if they were providing the public the only chance to preview the whole album before it was released, when in fact is was the same stream off Spektor's website. Still, a good way of getting it out there.
