Find another one. That's what I usually do.

If you think you're gonna lose it start sending out feelers to any possible clients you may have good relations with. When the golf shop I worked for went out of business some of the reps I had become friends with found me three different jobs at other golf shops (ultimately I chose to grow up and get a "proper" job) and a few clients who I had been altering their clubs for years even offered me a couple of jobs at their places of employment. If that doesn't get you anything try getting those clients to write you letters of recommendation. So many people looking for jobs you gotta have something that makes you stand out. We get so many applications where i work and 95% are worse than mine.

If you don't work with clients start getting recommendations from co-workers, supervisors (supervisors ONLY if you KNOW you're being let go. No maybes or they'll know you're looking for a new job and can you for that) and even friends.

Sorry to hear about the job. At the golf shop the owner came in on a Saturday and said we have to close this store down and we were like when? And he said two hours from now. We never noticed the U-Haul trucks parked out back. Just had a kid too where before losing the job was no big deal but now I had a rugrat to keep fed.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Well put.

Reach out to anyone for leads. You could try and join LinkedIn and look up coworkers from previous jobs and network with them to find out about job leads before they get posted.
Also, use your time wisely and maybe take a class in something or better yet get certified in something. Not sure what your job expertise is but as a hiring manager myself, I am impressed when I see that people have taken steps to better themselves and their skill sets even if it is not directly related to their career. Good luck!

Can you put your Polish to any use?

Possibly if I have a crash course there would be strong opportunities in the betting industry

Though as you know there are 100s 1000s of Poles over here

We have a Bosnian, Croatan and Pole at the job I'll be leaving.

I don't know about Britain, but in the States the public libraries are a centralized place for mags, internet use, journals and other info for jobs.

I am in a field where there is about a 2-3 month window of hiring and then that is it for the year. When I was looking for a new job, I had to prepare 8 months in advance and I used newspapers and let all my friends know I'd appreciate any postings in my field they came across.

It was helpful friends letting me know of postings. That is what got me the chance to interview for my dream job.

And learn from bad interviews. Go on every interview. A bad one prepared me for an interview I wanted even more.

Prior to that, when I was returning from overseas, I saved money and took a year off and got through a Masters program in 12 months. It was a pain as they usualy take 16, but that year off let me search for work while making me more marketable.

I accepted over a half dozen jobs before I took the one I really wanted and sent apology letters to the employers I turned down.

Yeah, we may joke around a lot, but job loss is something that is devastating. I don't know about women, but men define a great deal of who they are by their work. And to lose a job is to go through a serious period of questioning your self-worth. Don't.

Follow BF's advise and let people you know to give you a heads up if they come across any ads. And say thank you when they do. Don't ever criticize their suggestion. They may stop looking for you.

I think that goes for most people, regardless of sex.

Perhaps. Though depression is more prevalent in women according to the AMA, job loss has been found to hit males harder than females and leads to severe depression.
