Overrated bands

What band(s) do you think are overrated? I'll probably get flamed/shot for this, but here are a 2 of mine:

The Smiths
U2

Agree with U2 but really think the Smiths are underrated...they have a catalog of great songs but never really had any mainstream recognition...not that that matters.

Overrated? The Pixies, Nirvana, The Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumkins, NIN etc.....

Being I've stolen my screen name from the real Black Francis I have to respectfully disagree regarding the Pixies. They put out an amazingly strong body of work, influenced many an artist and gave us the lovely Kim Deal. I consider Frank Black/Black Francis to be one of rock's greatest and varied songwriters.

Now my beloved Frank Black/Black Francis (and JackT) would disagree but I consider the Beatles to be the most overrated band in history.

I definitely agree with you on the Beatles. They're good, but not THAT good!
I liken them to ABBA - really clever pop songs, but that's about it.

Leonard Cohen
Television
Iggy Pop
The Ramones
Nick Cave (oh no you di'int)
Lou Reed
The Cure
The Doors

Some I don't "get", some I like but still think are overrated.

It's kind of like Tom Cruise - I think the guy is completely overrated - but I've enjoyed every movie I've seen him in.

Wow we must be long lost twins or something. Are The Doors really that highly rated? I like them, but it doesn't seem like many people do. I like a lot of Lou Reed stuff also, but like you said....

Amen. Except for The Ramones and maybe Television. I haven't really listened to enough of their music to have an opinion.

And I read somewhere that Tom Cruise was just signed to play Adolph Hitler. I find that hilarious.

They wouldn't be the band you think they are without George Martin, who has also said (and I can't remeber his exact words) they are overrated.
