The Obligatory Depeche Mode thread

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Little Soul - fucking fabulous. I use this word a lot but it is haunting. And beautiful.

In Sympathy - subversive, I know this one will grow on me.

Peace - Not sure about the Gahan falsetto. Probably the weakest cut for me.

Comeback - My feelings on this song are well known. Love this version. Can't wait to hear it live later this year.

Just finished listening to it. First impressions...some tracks will take abit of time, but...on the whole...fucking awesome.

Its got a laid back, electro lounge feel in places...very unilke DM. Plus its got some great melodies. Dave and Martin both sound in fine form and Ben Hillier (producer) has reigned in some of the sonic excesses that overwhelmed Playing The Angel in places.

The album has had a right kicking on most DM forums, alot of the hardcore dont like it and think its too lightweight. I think if your pissing your hardcore off by changing direction so late in your career you are doing something right. Plus the leaked version doesnt sound anywhere near as good as this stream.

Highlights -

In Chains. Great moody intro, clean synth lines, stripped back arrangement, great vocals and guitar fills.

Come Back. What more can be said about this track. The studio version is all scuzzed up. Its a Mode masterpiece.

Jezebel. If Scott Walker used synths and wore a leather dress.

Corrupt. Best album closer since Higher Love.

In time I know the rest will grow on me (even Peace).
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

I think a lot of people are never going to let go of the fuller sounding production Alan brought to Depeche Mode. It took a while for me to come around. I don't consider myself a fan of minimalist anything (and I think calling the album minimalist is a stretch) but whatever DM is doing it works for me. The simplicity (if one could call it that) is just beautiful. Gahan's voice has become a treasure. Come Back is definitely the highlight for me. Scuzzy is exactly the word.

But yeah pissing off your fans this late in your career is pretty bad ass. Taking new directions this late is bad ass. A certain Liverpool band could do well to pay attention.

I hope Paul and Ringo are listening.

If that was supposed to be another dig at Let's Wrestle, the joke is on you, moron. They are from London.

We in the sailing community would say he makes beautiful music out that side.

Don't mention beautiful music and Dave Smith in the same post or he'll dive in to tell you all about his guitar playing, band and the time he supported Mansun.
