I'm gonna ask for forgiveness in advance, b/c I'm totally gonna go all drum geek on everyone. There were so many little signature things that Pete put into his parts that truly set him apart from everyone else. I heard Damon Reece from MK II Bunnies did a good job of copying his parts, but I've never heard/seen him play. I did hear some of the Blair Cunningham tour when he filled in for Pete during his Sex Gods freak out. Did Blair keep the beat and get the job done, yeah. But anyone versed w/the songs immediately could tell it wasn't him playing.

When I first heard the studio version of Back of Love, I thought there's got to be some drum overdubs on this. Then I saw a video of him playing it live, and I was totally amazed. Granted I was only about 16-17 yo and had not playing drums for very long, but the way he played that triplet on the low tom w/his left arm crossed under his right arm, keeping time on the high hat and the snare both with his right was totally genius. I've yet to see anyone play it like that since the Bunnies reformed.

Same for The Cutter. Listen to the studio version, there's what sounds like a double bass pedal part slipped in now and again. Saw a vid of him playing it live, and his low tom was tuned close enough to his bass drum that his was slipping that extra beat on the low tom playing w/his left hand. Sneaky and totally brilliant.

And those drum parts on HUH, I could go on for days. Not to mention that he played every damn song, other than OR where he pulled back a bit, like it was the last time he was ever going to play them.

Ok, I'll stop now. Everyone have a great week!

I have no knowledge about playing the drums but I know when I see something special and Pete was it. The intensity of his performances even on slower songs is something I'll never forget. I loved that stage line-up where they were all in a row.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

The Bunnymen were definitely never the same after Pete was gone. He gave the band their edge and backbone, IMO. Plus, the guy seemed like a genuinely nice person, totally unpretentious which I'm guessing is pretty rare in the music scene. I think that kind of personality only helped the Bunnymen considering Mac's personality.

Loved his drumming on Porcupine, especially on the title track, My White Devil, Gods Will Be Gods and Higher Hell, the Peel session version No Equation has some awesome drumming on it as well, IMO.

Whilst not a tribute band - I play Bass with a band called Senators and we're heavily influenced by the Bunnymen. Check our myspace site out. Got a blog running too. Last year we recorded a cover of Killing Moon (it's on the Myspace site) with Simon Humphrey - the guy who was the engineer (on amongst other things) the first Clash Album. We didn't record it to make money out of it - just 'cos it is a great song and I thought we did a great version of it. See what you think. Comments always welcome.......also got a review of the Echo Arena gig and the Zellig gig on the blog too.

We also had Ed Lay (drummer with Editors) play in the band a couple of weeks back. The story is on the blog site...........

Thanks for the comments. We played a gig in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire last night and played Rescue. Went down a storm! If you guys get the chance you should come and see us. We often play a couple of Bunnymen songs in the set.....

like the wandering cello bits. top stuff.

Went to see a smiths tribute band last night - The Smiths Indeed. Quite good for a night out but not, you know, that good. JOhnny Marr looked like Ant & Dec and failed in the 80s hair department. Moz bloke was good though and had a suitable quiff. And the boys in the band, v tight you'd have to say.

Did you check out the studio version we did of Rescue too? We recorded it in a small studio in York maybe a couple of years or so ago. With Killing Moon we wanted more depth to it - make it haunting - not the same as the original but in the same spirit as so to speak.....Did you see the Smiths tribute band in Liverpool. Got tickets to see the Bunnymen in Liverpool in December at the Academy - what's the venue like?

sounds OK but between you and me (sorry jack, I) its not my favourite bunnymen track by a long way and one I think they could drop without me noticing. Though obvously a bit of a favourite amongst the masses.

No SMiths lot was in Oxford, my nearest port of call for any half decent live music. They are doing fairly large tour and from the lliverpool area I think. Worth a look if you've nothing better to do but I wouldn't go any further afield.

No need to apologize to I for using correct grammar.

For Jack, using the word "whilst" and seeing it in print - it's a sexual experience. It gets Jack off.

Jack off.
I made a funny.
