I've always been fascinated by historical mysteries and especially the stories of WWI aviators such as Georges Guynemer and especially Frank Luke both of which died under mysterious circumstances. If any of that interests you then I recommend getting THE STAND: The Final Flight of Lt. Frank Luke, Jr. It is the definitive account of Luke's last flight and final stand before being killed. Amazing story and an amazing person.
If anyone else is into stuff like that and have some book recommendations I would appreciate it.

Those early aviators, man I can't imagine what it was like. And a lot of them gravitated towards that on their own. The trenches must've seem like heaven compared to burning to death in the cockpit of a plane. And Frank Luke went after the observation balloons which was considered borderline suicide.

From what I've read and pictures I've seen of life in the trenches, I'd say equal. You don't have the mustard gas (as bad as burning to death) and cabin fever in the plane, but then again in the trenches you don't spiral down to the ground while burning alive.
