Of all the bands the Bunnymen influenced

Was anyone here influenced by the Bunnymen in their musical pursuits - whether it be to find music like them or play music? I only wanted to play guitar like Will. Growing up Guitar player magazine only head metal tab and, though it would have helped my playing immensely, I avoided the magazine out of fear I would sound like them.

Heaven Up Here had me searching music that would be called Goth. Despite not influencing each other, bands like Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy were favs because of the influence HUH had. I came to find out about many earlier bands because of wanting to find something like HUH.

Mac said that. I love, love, love the JAMC but they didn't have the variety the Bunnymen possessed. Curious to hear their new album as their B-Sides box set is amazing. Probably best B-Side collection ever.

I think the influence regarding the Flaming Lips is pretty clear cut. Their early music was melodic but still jagged, reminded me a lot of Crocodiles and Porcupine. Their later music was more orchestrated and fuller and The Soft Bulletin especially reminds me of Ocean Rain. Plus their lyrics can be somewhat impenetrable like Mac used to be.

Pavement is less obvious but I'll take their word for it and I always liked their cover of the Killing Moon.

I'd say Arcade Fire is the closest modern band in saound to the Bunnymen. Musically and vocally. The wife thought it "Black Mirror" was the Bunnymen.

I was going to say the same thing regarding Flaming Lips, Soft Bulletin has a definite Ocean Rain vibe going on in it. One of the songs has a xylophone that sounds straight out of Seven Seas.

Pavement were more influenced by The Fall, IMO (Stephen Malkmus basically admitted that they ripped off the Fall on Slanted and Enchanted), but their later stuff has some guitar that sounds more in line with The Bunnymen. They would definitely be my favorite band that's been influenced by the Bunnymen that I'm aware of.

I guess the Shins would be my #2 band, although I'm not sure what I think of them after their third album.

I forgot how much Jack likes the Shins.

Just to clarify, because I think Jack's 2nd fav band is the Shins, the Shins are probably my second favorite band that's been influenced by the Bunnymen, but not my 2nd fav band. It's hard to gauge how many bands have actually been influenced by the Bunnymen. I didn't even know the Shins were influenced by them until their 3rd album came out and the singer mentioned Ocean Rain.

I don't either, really. I think I posted this before on here, but the guitar solo in Mine's Not A High Horse reminds me a lot of Will's guitar solo in Silver.

A lot of bands that have cited the Bunnymen as a big influence don't really sound that much like them, IMO, except for maybe a few UK bands like The Coral. I think The Bunnymen pretty much have their own unique sound.
