The Pains of Being Pure At Heart

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart's dreamy self-titled debut EP contains less than 15 minutes of music -- more than enough to steal our pure hearts. (Admittedly, they had us from the go by titling the out-of-the-gates opening track "This Love is Fucking Right!").

The Brooklyn trio of vocalist/guitarist Kip Berman, bassist Alex Naidus, and vocalist/keyboardist Peggy Wang-East mix sugary boy/girl vocals, Jesus & Mary Chain's rain clouds and Darklands drum machine minus the face-melting noise, sneaker-gazing a la Black Tambourine (or, hey hey, rifle through the rest of the Slumberland back catalog to namedrop something with a bit more jangle) and punky Comet Gain(s) into addictive pop gold that locates a place beyond the band's well-chosen influences. That said, if you're in the mood for the brothers Reid check out the amply titled "Doing All the Things That Wouldn't Make Your Parents Proud." Want a little more Verve? Drift straight for the title track.

JAMC references abound the way VU did in the early 80s.

5/18 - Wrexham, UK - Central Station

ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!

You know you have arrived when you have played the Central Station in Wrexham.
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

I take it it is a dive.

Still, to be 19 or 20 and on a world tour - despite the venues - I am jealous.

They're playing Ithaca and Rochester, but not Buffalo?

This city is dying a slow painful death.

Before I waste time on a painfully slow download (on dial-up) could someone be kind enough to explain just why they are the "next big thing" in terms of a comparison to 80's and 90's bands that I might actually have heard of?
Pardon my cynicism but despite the great name, the hype sounds a bit too good to be true. If they really are that good I might see them in Southampton.

After a painfully slow download I can confirm that the greatness of this band is not some form of hype after all.

Hype? Hype is having a street in New York City named after you, not one aticle in an online magazine.
I don't know about greatness. I know about goodness.
It is their first release and they are a bunch of kids on an indie label (a real indie label).
If you were expecting Ocean Rain, yeah, you were expecting too much.

Spoiler - people smile in the video -

And as for a live show - don't expect too much - they play with a drum machine:

I've listened to their album a few times. They sound just like pre-Loveless 80's MBV, with a little Lush and Stone Roses thrown in. A couple really good songs on the album, but definitely not very original, except for the fact they're the only band playing this kind of music right now. Maybe there's others out there.

Like I said, I cannot argue that this band is not the second coming of anything or an innovator. It is just so nice to see people taking the punk DIY and do it with a different genre of pop.

The band came to Rochester - nearby - here is a friend's review of the show he didn't see:

"it was lame. we didn't stay to see them. the openers were ok. my sister overheard one of the dudes from POBPAH saying "we're too big to be playing this place," so she didn't feel like staying, and i was drunk and sleepy, so i didn't object. i guess once a band puts out 30 minutes of derivitave music that's liked by pitchfork then they're suddenly too good to play the bug jar. meh, skinny-jeaned hipster fucks. "
