I'd say Mac went from about 40% of his original range to about 85%. There were definitely a few screeches at the OR shows but otherwise I thought his voice was in amazing form.

And while I enjoy "slagging" Peter as much as anyone Dave is right, he is the web guy and isn't the one making these God awful decisions on the Bunnymen's behalf. I suspect he's banged his head on the keyboard a time or two dealing with management.

Dave Smith wrote:Face it,the Bunnymen are doing nothing at present, hence Mac's solo gigs. And I dont feel too much anticipation for the new album around these forums.4 years since Siberia and we only get Think I Need It Too and the other one played via some obscure radio station. The Fountain was recorded in 2007 and still not released.Quality problems?I reckon 50:50 its been ditched and the band will split after the next set of £ busting OR shows and festival shows.
To be fair to Peter,he can only do what he's given by the managment who appear to tell him things and then dont bother i.e the OR gigs announcement in November.

I know it's not Peter's fault, I've said as much before on here. But you make a good point, Forgotten Fields was played on a radio station in Brazil months ago, why wasn't that played on the official website, at least for a little while in a streaming format?? I mean, what the fuck is going here? It's so bizarre looking at how the band and management have handled this album. Maybe incompetent is a better word.

I Think I Need It Too was also on a BBC radio station months and months ago. Nothing on the official site. It's a great way to say "Thanks, fans".

Perhaps Will is just tired. Siberia was supposed to be the comeback. It flopped. He might be content with his friends in his smalltown djing here and there.

He may just not be excited like we are to make music anymore.

I hear they are going to debut some of The Fountain Material at the SPIN party and SXSW festivla in Austin coming up shortly. It is a good venue for testing out material getting direct feedback and really trying to get the new songs blended into the set. The crowd isn't there just for the millionth playing of The Killing Moon. Those die-hards are the cream of the crop for indie and new music. It's a testing ground.

B-sides didn't MAC say the album was going to drop in April anyways? Be patient. I suspect there may be a roe going on between him and Will, but the album will be released or leaked eventually. The fact that they're booking shows is still good news.

I hope they take as long as possible testing out and improving the material-and they can make incredible improvements on mediocre songs, as the difference between the ordinary version of "Baseball Bill" and the stellar version at the end of Avalanche proves. Perhaps they have learned the lesson from the past-first they get back all their credibility. Then they do something cringe-worthy, enough to make you ashamed to wear a Bunnymen T-shirt or own up to liking them. Perhaps they are trying to break the cycle. I remember when I had been mouthing off to my mates about how great the band were, then the lame WAYG... album came out and they said "this Echo and the what is it band, are they as good as the Manic Street Preachers, when they play "You Stole the Sun From my Heart?" and I colored up and said "er-um-well they are having an off day"

I had the same problem. Mate of mine took the piss when I Want to be There, Don't Let It Get You Down and Top of the World came out, leaving much explaining to do of "They have done much much better stuff than that". Think I Need it Too has a similar vibe to it, but only because of the naff chorus lyrics. This is a band that came up with weird song titles like "Bring on the Dancing Horses" not your run of the mill "Whatever you want, whatever you need, think I need it too" . Seems the rest of the album does generally have good song titles though.

The problem with your theory is this - the 'stellar version' of Baseball Bill at the end of Avalanche (2000) was actually from an Electrafixion single (1996). The 'ordinary version', as released on Evergreen (1997), was what they were left with after 'testing out and improving' it.

I think he may have lost interest in making music with Mac. If all he gets to do is sprinkle some Will fairy dust on Mac's songs I could see how he would tire of that. He should go write some songs with Morrissey.

NO GOOD has ever come from the Bunnymen reworking material that I can recall. I wish they would have stuck with rock songs reminiscent of Avalanche (still LOVE that song) and some of their Electrafixion output.

 i don't know about songs with morrissey, but maybe we can get some new Glide music released if the Fountain is seemingly never seeing the light of day until they are done tweaking with it.

Will's a tech-savvy guy, I bet he'd be all for a Glide internet release... or at least streaming a new song or two on his website/myspace.

I only say Morrissey because A) I think he's still great and B) most importantly I think Morrissey limits himself soley to lyrics.

I guess I'll throw out a C) and mention Mac's lyrics have been slightly less than transcendental lately.
