Good idea to play it. Could bring in new young fans.

The trouble is if they play songs like "You Need" at a venue for hip, obscure and new bands they are going to sound stale. Or maybe not, with M83, Ladyhawke and every other band cashing in on the 80s sound this might be the perfect fit.

Hopefully they pull out a few like "The Puppet" and "The Promise." Those songs still sound as fresh as they did when they were released.

Yesterday word leaked that Dan Auerbach, singer/songwriter/guitarist of The Black Keys, will be launching his solo album “Keep It Hid” at SXSW. Auerbach provided much of the instrumentation on “Keep It Kid” himself, including guitar, percussion, and keyboards. But when the Black Keys blues man goes out on tour starting later this month, the exciting new San Antonio quartet known as Hacienda will fill in as his backing band. We can’t confirm that this is exactly how it will go down when he performs at SXSW, but it is a very likely scenario.

A few other exciting names recently announced for SXSW include Tori Amos, Echo & The Bunnymen, the Hold Steady, and featured speaker Steven Van Zandt. Check out the newly redesigned SXSW section on Do512 to add these artists to your schedule!

I cannot believe they are coming back to Austin! They played sxsw in 2006. So so very excited.

Today they were added to the official list of bands on the sxsw site, but no official shows listed there yet. On the Austinist, they listed EatB at Emo's on the 18th http://austinist.com/2009/02/10/sxsw_mu ... s_hold.php
That probably means a short set. Hopefully they will do more than just this show.

SXSW can be a bummer if you don't have a $650.00 badge. Even then you aren't guaranteed entry. If you have a $150.00 wristband it's difficult to get in to popular shows. Get there early and get in line, badges get in first, then wristbands, then people who pay at the door.

Still, it is fabulous news.

That would have been classic looking for the wrong night, place and accompanying act.

Does it usually take a while before a designated site to play is found? Or am I missing it? (As I had missed the year.)

The badges and wristbands are for several days of music all over the city. The badges also include seminars put on by musicians and music industry folks. Devo is performing this year and I think they are doing a seminar too. So the badge price is supposed to be justified by all the options you get.

In the early days of sxsw, before the masses began coming, one could usually get into anything you wanted to with a wristband, maybe you had to wait outside for a few minutes, but you could hop from club to club to catch different acts. In the last few years, it has gotten so crowded that badges only have a good chance of seeing the best shows. For example, I had to miss Iggy Pop because there was no way to get in with only a wristband, but I did get to see the Buzzcocks, so it just depends. Maybe the economy will keep it from being so crowded this year.

I am determined to get into Bunnymen; they CAN'T stop me.

Yes, they roll this thing out bit by bit. First you get discounted badge prices before any bands are announced, then they start announcing bands about a month before, and then a couple of weeks before they announce venues. Wristbands are very limited and go on sale close to the dates.

There is a rumor that EatB will be at Emos. In 2006 they played in a park for free. There are always a few free official park shows. Bunnymen also did a invitation party sponsored by VH1 and Blender that year. Hopefully they will do more than one this time too.

There is so much going on here that week - official sxsw shows (1800 bands according to http://sxsw.com/music/shows/bands - including Glasvgas and Primal Scream) and lots of unofficial stuff too. There are showcases that you have to sign up for online. Last year I caught a Liverpool showcase and a Scottish one too.

Jesus what a rip-off, for $650 I'd want guaranteed front row seats for everything!!.

We give them a mountain of free software and we still have to pay big $$$$ to get in. I don't think the company is gonna kick down to send me this year.

Here's hoping I'm still going to the Austin Film Festival.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

The sxsw schedule was posted yesterday. Here is the listing for Bunnymen.
http://sxsw.com/music/shows/schedule/?a=show&s=93427

Two official shows! There could be some unofficial performances too. There are lots of events that don't require wristbands/badges. Some of those do require signing up online, others are by invitation or who you know. The Austinist listed this for Friday:
"The Scottish Arts Council will be at Lambert's with Primal Scream and Glasvegas." Not sure what the deal is to get into this one, probably an online sign up.
