Who is the better guitar player in your opinion between Will and Johnny Marr?

Sergeant. I think he has maintained a very high standard for over 20 years where Johnny Marr has done nothing of note in 20 some odd years. And Modest Mouse? That killed any and all left over good will from the Smiths.

I think the quality of Morrissey's output is almost entirely the result of his collaborators but that being said it would seem he brought out the best in Marr cause he's been floundering since he left the Smiths.

I don't know. I think Viva Hate sort of disproved that theory, don't you?

Not really. My point is no matter how good Morrissey's lyrics may be if his co-writer isn't up to the task the song will a loser. I don't think Morrissey has a sole songwriting credit to his name. Not that David Gahan does either but I don't expect as much from him.

Definitely Will, but like comparing Mac to Morrissey, they're completely different guitarists. It's true that Marr hasn't done anything of note that I can recall since The Smiths, but his guitar work on those Smiths albums is still some of the best guitar work I've ever heard.

A lot of Smiths stuff, that mix of Morrissey, Marr's trademark guitar and that bass are pretty close to being transcendental, IMO, for lack of a better word. At least for that kind of music.

The Bunnymen will always be my favorite band but I can kinda understand why some people still worship The Smiths, even more so than The Bunnymen.

Will always struck me as an artist whose medium just happened to be the guitar.

I always got the impression of a virtuoso player from Marr, but in a more conventional sense.

I didn't mean to imply that Marr was conventional, just that Will seemed to be doing something entirely different from other guitar players in general. Like E&tB didn't have a guitar player at all-- they had a guy with a guitar with certain ideas about sounds and feeling pictures he wanted to paint, and he knew enough about the guitar to get close to it.

Marr does some great guitar, and thats it. Will does the same, but then goes up a level, and then another, and then in for the kill.

Comes down to the old saying " it's not how you play but it's what you play."

I have little doubt that Marr is technically a far superior guitarist to Will, I think even Will would concede that...... But I would always prefer listening to Will playing guitar than Marr as I prefer what Will is playing .........

Mind you I would still love to hear the fabled Mac & Marr Demos, just to hear how they sounded..........
