White Lies debut

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

White Lies debut

Postby Dave Smith » Tue Jan 20, 2009 5:30 pm

Well dont expect the Bunnymen.Expect a twenty year old saying 'Tonight Matthew,I'm going to be Julian Cope' being backed by early Spandau Ballet and Pulp.But...after a few plays the grandiose production fades and the songs start to kick in.Okay they must have Great Dominions etched on the brain but they pick up the baton dropped when The Open cruelly were and run with it.

No big cigar but a few Hamlet miniatures.7/10.Worth a listen.

Yeah, fucking open your eyes Smith
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

Saw them support Glasvegas a couple of months ago, not bad live at all.

Ok - I got the cd - It is predictable, rehashed, overly dramatic, cliche chord progressions - like a less interesting Mission U.K. - And I enjoy it.

There is a term in the UK for bands like White Lies - "Landfill Indie"

In other words...you buy it, play it for a couple of weeks, then never touch it again. Abit like I did with White Lies, Glasvegas and Editors.

I still like Glasvegas - half the cd is good - but they look to need a big learning curve in the song writing dept if the follow up is to do anything.

I like the Editors first one still - the second was just to redundant and I highly suspect I just can't take the over compression - it is killing the listening experience for most cds I am getting.

White Lies - sadly - I got to track 4 and - omg - the lyrics are just pathetic.

I think it is time to invest in some old deus cds.

The UK is full of landfill indie-you buy the cd,play, quite like and then never get excited agian. Glasvegas only have three good songs.White Lies need time to develop and Editors have just gone shit.

Meanwhile in the land of Smith I just discovered a band called Envelopes whilst flicking around Sky arts. They were playing on 'In the basement'.Swedish band with a Mo Tucker lookalike playing a Rickenbacker.Choppy guitars but sounded quite original.Definately will investigate further-have been around since 2005.I'd never heard of 'em.
