Whatever happened to white dog shit?

Got through the 7 episodes of the US version of Life on Mars, now making my way through the UK version. At one point, they threaten a witness by forcing his face towards a pile of white dog shit.

I remember I used to see white dog shit all the time as a kid, but I don't recall having run into any in recent years. Was it caused by something they used to put in dog food - or a medication or something?
