radio stations

Does anyone in the US listen to over the air radio for music anymore? Where do you get your music fix? Just curious because it just seems to me that as far as I am concerned FM radio is dead now when it comes to music. Nothing currently on the dial reflects my tastes.

There is some public radio like WNKU and WVXU that have some decent afternoon music programming but they are only on my radio presets in the car because of NPR to be honest. Other than that, in the car, I just listen to my iPod. We used to have a great station that I listened to since the 80's, WOXY, but they went internet only a few years back when the owners decided to retire and sell the license.

I got my wife Sirius last year, so we listen to that but that's satellite of course. At work I listen to WOXY.com to hear some new stuff and sometimes I rip the stream overnight and copy the playlist over to my iPod and I can get WOXY back in my car.

I don't even have any radio stations set on my stereo at home.

For the most part, I listen to music I already own. I do keep an eye on what's going on here, youtube, myspace and on music publication sites to figure out what new stuff to listen to.

If I'm too busy to build my own playlist at home, I'll tune to one of the digital music channels on tv.

Until last month, I had 2 free years of Napster-to-go. I listened to a lot of playlists on there, and built auto-mixes based on the song I was listening to (sort of like Genius). I downloaded a LOT of DRM-encoded music over those two years... one morning, I woke up and elves removed all of the DRM. As a result, I've got about 800gb of 256kbps tracks.

Radio? I don't need no stinkin radio.

In my truck with the god awful Bunnymen mix CD stuck in it I listen to 103.1 which is new to me but they have played Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Ramones and some newer stuff I found tolerable. Until just last week when he left the air I would listen to Larry Elder from time to time and sometimes the Ron Reagan show. Until the CD got stuck I NEVER listened to the radio and was content to listen to my own CDs.

In the Honda it came with XM radio but I don't use it cause the stereo kicks ass. Six CD changer and an mp3 plug and some other thing (I don't use) so I have access to about 6000 songs so I don't need the XM.

When I look for new tunes I use emusic and itunes to suggest stuff based on the artists I like, I check out the recommendations on this site since I assume you guys know a thing or two about music, and I have this big ass All Music guide which I've read every review and buy stuff based off those recommendation. I put more stock in reviews by Heather Phares and Ned Raggett.

i hardly ever listen to the radio... when i do, there is a station in philly that doesn't completely suck - radio 104.5 which attempts to play "alternative" but it seems most of the playlist is stuck in the 90s. but i normally only listen to my own CDs.

online for streaming audio i go to BBC 6 Music, and WOXY and sometimes virgin radio UK (which is now absolute radio).

i subscribe to the "song of the day" podcasts from MPR and KEXP (available through itunes) which gives me a free song everyday and sort of keeps me current on the new/indie stuff.

i also download an "indie rock playlist" from the torrents each month (i forget who uploads them, but search for that title and you'll find 'em). that seems to have a lot of the good new stuff that is being played on both UK radio and the indie stations (that are non-existent in philly). each monthly list is 120 songs. i just throw out the ones i don't like.

I listen to Indie 103.1 in the car, and on the internet at home for some of its specialty shows (Henry Rollins, for instance). Also listen to KCRW on the morning drive, KJAZZ on weekend afternoons for its blues show, BBC 6 for Don Letts' show, and I've started listening some to WLUW (L.A. alternative college station) and WHPK in Chicago on the internet. If all else fails, I listen to cassette tapes in my car.

I've thought about getting satellite radio in my car. Is it worth it?
