Oh I see. The company is named, position of the person and the fact it was a conference call would make it rather likely the claim could be easily proven or disputed.

US shares have risen sharply, following a report that US President-elect Barack Obama has chosen his treasury secretary, reassuring investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 494 points or 6.5% to end at 8,046.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 climbed 6.3%.

The NBC television network reported the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Timothy Geithner, would be nominated as treasury secretary.

Mr Obama is expected to announce his economic team on Monday.

The NBC report was welcomed by investors in what has been yet another volatile week of trading amid ongoing fears over the scale of the economic contraction.

Obama's Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy
Stunning Break with Last Eight Years

In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.
Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS' "Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodox verbal tick, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.
But Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.
According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.
"Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement," says Mr. Logsdon. "If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist."
The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using complete sentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, "Okay, subject, predicate, subject predicate - we get it, stop showing off."
The President-elect's stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.
"Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said

Ron Howard was on last night's Daily Show. At one point, Stewart referred to Howard's Obama endorsement video, which I'd never seen. It was entertaining:

"I had no contact with the governor or his office, and so we were not - I was not aware of what was happening" - Barak Obama

from Quincy, IL station KHQA's website:

Ill. governor meeting with Obama today
By Carol Sowers
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 at 10:39 a.m.

CHICAGO, ILL. — Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

That’s one of Obama’s first priorities today.

He’s meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it.

Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement.

There’s already been speculation about his selection…from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Chicago’s south side who co-chaired Obama’s presidential campaign, to recently-retired state senate president Emil Jones, to the governor himself.

It’s likely the governor will make his decision quickly so the new senator will get some seniority before newly-elected senators take office in January.

Part of the timing depends on when Obama officially vacates his senate seat.

KHQA’s Alexis Hunt is speaking with Illinois Senator John Sullivan today about his thoughts on that replacement process, his time working with Obama in the state senate, and if there’s a chance Sullivan might play a role in the Obama administration. Watch KHQA News at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. tonight to hear what he has to say.

Now the story has been removed and replaced with

KHQA TV wishes to offer clarification regarding a story that appeared last month on our website ConnectTristates.com. The story, which discussed the appointment of a replacement for President Elect Obama in the U.S. Senate, became the subject of much discussion on talk radio and on blog sites Wednesday.

The story housed in our website archive was on the morning of November 5, 2008. It suggested that a meeting was scheduled later that day between President Elect Obama and Illinois Governor Blagojevich. KHQA has no knowledge that any meeting ever took place. Governor Blagojevich did appear at a news conference in Chicago on that date.

I'm betting they got a late night call asking if they enjoyed having an FCC license.

Yeah, I was wondering how long it was going to take before someone here was going to infer that Obama was in on the Ill Gov's bullshit. Thought JackT was gonna make that move. I'd think if Obama were any way involved, it would've come out. The Gov's been bugged for quite some time now.

No I don't think Obama was involved with the little scheme. I think he did meet with the governor, the governor floated the idea of a little mutual back scratching and Obama told him to go fuck himself. I think Obama comes out of it looking good.

My only point is that it seems a bit of a stretch that Obama had no contact with the governor regarding his replacement as being president elect it could be critical to the policies he would like to enact.

And I do think it suspicious that articles that contradict Obama are disappearing. Don't you?

Yeah. but in the end, that's on the news agency involved, not Obama. Far be it for me to accuse Bush and Fox news of rewriting any of the past 8 years.

I always hear people bitching about Fox News (and it's not my cup of tea) but can't the conservative crowd have a news station? Can't CNN and MSNBC be accused of being the same as Fox News but with a different viewpoint?

NPR is definitely to the left. As much as I like NPR, I hear a distinctive tone and confrontational tone towards guests that are populists or conservative. I also noticed during the election NPR would interview actual individuals from Obama's election team while using clips of McCain sound bites.

I was actually quite impressed when I heard the head of the Republican PR guy treated with respect by the NPR announcer when asked about the party's desire to improve its image.

What is troubling is the denial that there is a slant by an organization from the loyal audience.
