It's a crap idea. When Radiohead actually put this out as a physical product it ill cost around $80, fook that! They have ceased to exist as far as I am concerned and I hate Steve Jobs too!

Audioholics.com has an interesting assessment of the Radiohead's experiment:

It seems like the upshot of the article is that cutting out the recording industry is enough to make this approach financially viable.

"Radiohead has been bankrolled by their former label for the last 15 years. They’ve built a fan base in the millions with their label, and now they’re able to cash in on that fan base with none of the income or profit going to the label this time around.

Mike Laskow, Taxi/Independent Artist & Repertoire

This statement is of course record industry BS.

Labels recoup all the money they front any musician in a record contract from royalties before the musicians are paid any money. If an album does not make enough money to pay off the advance and any other production and marketing costs, the money will be recouped from the royalties on the next album and the artist will not be paid any royalties until both albums are paid off, every penny fronted by the label. downloading it for free. Price goes down with oversupply, simple Economics."

I disagree with that being record industry BS. Much of the debt bands incure to their label is often their own fault. I work in the concert industry and see bands waste Tour Support money all the time...often this is due to poor management, sometimes ego but what ever the case it is poor judgement on the bands part. I also see bands earn thousands of dollars a night in Merch sales ...thus my bewilderment at the Bunnymen's shitty merch. Labels do make a financial investment and they are usually publicly held companies...they have have an obligation to make some effort to insure their investors/stockholders a reasonable rate of return. It's business.

The Bunnymen have always been skimpy in the merch department haven't they?

No. I bought several shirts that were cool when I saw them in the 80's.

Well, I bought a hoodie on the Flowers/25th anniversary tour and they had t-shirts and the avalanche disc out then.

I feel so stupid now

I do have the Flowers tour shirt with the red star and I remember the merch booth. that was when that guy was selling those Bunnygod statues. I don't remember any merch from Evergreen but I wasn't looking for it either. I missed the WAYGTDWYL and Siberia tours.

Compared to other (even lesser) bands their merchandise at shows has been sparse.

UK merch has been sparse and repititive as well or shall we say not very tempting.25th anniversary booklet with just pictures-£5.Pretty naff t-shirts £15.Skinny t-shirts!Do they not realise we are mainly a bunch of late-30 and 40 year olds!I would look bloody ridiculous.New bag....zhhh.I go on.Where are the exclusive tour cd's or anything similar? The merch in the 80's was quality-huge choice of cool t-shirts,programmes,posters-brilliant stuff and I spent a fortune.Last time I bought any merch was a Flowers mug.The handle dropped off.
