speaking of covers.........

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

speaking of covers.........

today when i was in the band room at school waiting for the bus for the football game, my son said to me: Mom, tell them who sings this song... and a girl started playing Hallelujah on the piano...and i immediately said Leonard Cohen.....and everyone else that was standing nearby said Rufus Wainright at the same time, and i was like: pfft NO!!! he stole it! they were all like woah, we didn't know he didn't write that!

that's the problem with crap (or just new) bands covering good songs! the kids always think it's this great new song, but they don't wanna hear the truth, that it's OLD! makes me proud that my kids know what's what!

Oh come on Red, how many of us knew Black Cadillac was a cover when we first heard London Calling? Or Police and Thieves of The Clash? Or the Beatles doing Twist and Shout?

Plus John Cale's version is the best anyway.

Must be an American thing most people in the UK tend to think it's a Jeff Buckley song although I do prefer the John Cale version also ........, which is the version used in Shrek despite them using "Ruth" on the soundtrack cd

but on the good side they hear good music and recognise it as such. If I say to my lot, here listen to this, brilliant isn't it they do the typical teenage thing and say its crap, just because its someone I like - and luckily thats about the level of teenage rebellion I get - but they discover something for themselves and they come to it open minded. THats whats brilliant about those films that came out over the last few years, shrek introduced them to cale (or whoever) and Eels, and thanks to rugrats go wild they also like a bit of the clash.

Love that album... and the movie.

Rufus Wainright does get a little built-in cred, though - his dad was Loudon Wainright III - noted folk singer famous for "Dead Skunk (in the Middle of the Road" and "Rufus is a Tit Man".

oh, so Rufus was on the Shrek cd?? explains it. i was wondering how they even KNEW the song to begin with. (we didn't really get to discuss it, the bus had arrived by then) Jeff Buckley did do an AWESOME version, but is he really that huge over here, mainstream speaking? i don't think the generation of kids in high school right now would really know who he is... but if Rufus was on the Shrek cd then there ya go. John Cale's version is great! i don't know which version is my favourite -- the song itself is so good it doesn't matter. (never heard Rufus' version)

Jon Bon Jovi singing Leonard Cohen - isn't that one of the signs of the Apocalypse?
