In the suburban U.S., John Peel records in the bin were a signal to us as kids that a band was something unique and worht checking out. Those gray borders with a black center and listings of bands he had played filled us in on what music at a time when a 12 year old had very little else to go as AOR radio was playing nothing and the local college radio station was two years off from being created.

Ah, the black and grey covers. It's weird to see the Peel Session CDs with actual artwork.
