Geek stuff: Streaming your music library

Postby Frank The Bunny » Mon Oct 06, 2008 10:02 am

I've got a 750gb hard drive full of music on my home computer (and a second 750gb hard drive for video). This is all hooked into my home entertainment center - I record TV on the same PC - can play all my music through my surround system using iTunes, Windows Media Player or the Media Center application in Vista.

Here's the thing - being so connected at home, I want access to all my music content when at work. I tried Orb a couple years ago with some success. This morning I happened upon Simplify Media. http://www.simplifymedia.com

I installed it on my PC, and it's searching my iTunes library right now.
It's also available as a free app on the iPhone, so I was able to install it, and within a couple minutes, I was streaming songs from my library on my iPhone!!.

I'll let you know how it works when I try to connect from work, but I'm pretty excited. I don't like having duplicate libraries from home/work/wherever, so this is pretty cool.

I don't have time to listen at work anymore but that sounds cool.

Any CD I own has been ripped to mp3 and exists on my main pc. I have a surround sound system on my TV and Tivo in my living room. The Tivo allows me to access music, pictures and video from any networked pc that has the Tivo Desktop app installed on my home network. So, from my living room I can pretty much access any song I have via the Tivo interface and it plays through my stereo. I can even stream music from my favorite online station via the Tivo with the same method without having to be in front of the computer. Tivo also has access to Live365.com stations and Rhapsody.

I like my Tivo.

Tivo is the greatest gift to mankind God has bestowed upon us.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

That all sounds much too complex for my simple mind. I'll stick with
dollars and cents, you can keep the tech stuff.

How do you rank air conditioning and the wireless remote control?

i have the inferior Comcast DVR. while i love that it records my tv shows for me, i have none of these other features that Tivo offers... i did hear a rumor that sometime in the future the Comcast DVR would be replaced with Comcast TiVo boxes, but probably be more expensive. i don't know when that's gonna happen though (or if it will).

I've never done Tivo - with the dual TV tuner and recording capabilities of my PC, I've never seen the need for a subscription-based service.

What caused me to start this thread was my excitement that I can now listen to my entire music collection from anywhere - work, home, mobile. Also, as I've spent a lot of time tagging and organizing my music. It's cool to be able to keep all the same formatting - including playlists - wherever I am, without having to duplicate anything

That is very cool. It took me A LONG time to get 1500 songs to my work computer. Twice.

Have you guys checked that emusic service? It's pretty bitchin. I do the 100 songs a month and you can download them on ANY computer through the website and their music selections run very closely to my tastes.
