RAH-too much hype and expectation?

Anyone else slightly concerned that people are expecting way too much?You cant predict 'special' shows and lets face it,no one knows how Nocturnal Me,Crystal Days,Yo Yo Man and Thorn of Crowns are going to sound by a band twenty years older.There could be a big lull in the middle of the OR set if the band arent on the money.

At this point, if you got your tickets and your travel plans what's the point of being anything but excited? If it is a let down, it will be regardless of whether you were exctied about it or not.

Yes, slightly concerned about, you know, the obvious possible flaw but as red says, or perhaps it was doris day, what will be will be. Also, there are about 10 people, including you and my good self, post on these forums and about 4990 other people who dont who are going on tuesday. So i think you have nought to worry about. Its gonna be great.

I saw the mug, yes brilliant, but do they deliver to the UK from that shop? I might go for a 'even god has to soundcheck teeshirt' if they do them in extra large, I wonder if mac wears one. I think he should.

All in all, relatively speaking, quite excited, which on the fat cherry scale of things, is a good thing. MOre so than usual I'd say - I mean, after all those years of moaning about the setlist, I'm going to get my wish we're going to get something different - well OK its not HUH but it'll do.

Expect too much? What are people expecting? I expect as much as advertised -- a 16-piece string orchestra, more use of acoustic guitars, etc making it a non-standard Bunnymen show than those I have seen since 1998, at least for the Ocean Rain piece. And with the bonus of seeing much much more people in the audience in a pretty amazing building.

I'm planning on it (NY) sounding like the Bunnymen from 2004 on but with an orchestra. I think Mac's "improved" singing is more like working within his limitations and avoiding those embarrassing croaks. It'll be fun hearing the Ocean Rain album in its entirety but I'm not expecting any life changing.

Being out of tune and croaking your way through Nocturnal Me or Thorn of Crowns is a different matter. One of the things that I don't like with the recent sets has been Never Stop. It now sounds bland when sang live, mostly because Mac can't sing it at the range it was originally recorded in. Nocturnal Me, it'll pass given the album version was sang generally in low key (and with loud string arrangements, nobody would probably notice), but Thorn of Crowns will be the one. That sang in a flat low key without the change of vocal range throughout and echoey vocal effect that was on the original, it could sound terrible. It'll never sound like this again, but I wish it would.

Agree with A Promise, but they did do a lo-fi version a few years back largely to suit Mac's singing voice of now. As far as Thorn of Crowns goes, I just don't think that is the kind of song Mac would be able to sing in the same way. The vocal style is a bit like in parts the way he sang Rollercoaster. He changes his style all the way through the song, something that he doesn't (or can't do) on everything by the Bunnymen of recent times. I always think the way that Mac sang Thorn of Crowns showed what a great singer he was. Untouchable.

Thorn of Crowns shows just how important the basslines are int hose old songs. When he breaks out of the verse it is the bass line that carries that move into that major feel . . .


And thanks gp - I don't think I have ever liked that sound as much as today.
