PCs made in UK?

Postby JackT » Sun Aug 10, 2008 12:21 pm

What kinds of Windows boxes do they use over there in the U.K nowadays? I know there used to be UK-based computer manufacturers (I had a Timex-Sinclair waaaay back in the day) and my brother has something called a "Tiny" PC of somewhat recent vintage that is a Windows box. Do you guys run Dells and Gateways or what?

We have the usual shite over here, HP, Dell, Packard Bell, Medion, Mac etc etc. I've always preferred to build my own however.

Never heard of Medion. Used to be that building your own was cheaper, but it's hard to beat prices on PCs nowadays. There's a website called Sharkyextreme that occasionally describes the best bang-for-the-buck PC you can build for $1000. It's interesting to follow how quickly performance increases.

My understanding is HP owns Compaq.

not to mention when you type "http://www.compaq.com" into the address field, you're directed to http://h18000.www1.hp.com/

I think HP's owned Compaq since around 2001 or 2002

We would like to have a capital "I" in there Mr Cherry, if you please.

Dell is International, with HQ in the U.S. I don't doubt they have significant presence in Europe, especially Ireland.

Aren't they based in Round Rock, Texas, or somewhere else near Austin? All my PCs at work and at home have been Dells. Before the late '90s, at work, they were all funky newspaper text editing systems, including SII Coyotes, may they rest in peace -- bright green text on a black screen, included.

Depends on what you describe as significant. They have 17,500 employees in Europe, headquarters in the UK with manufacturing and customer care facilities in Ireland.

A friend and I were talking about the old door-stop Timex Sinclair computer. Mine had the 16K RAM expansion.
