'Think I Need It Too' due out on July 14?

General discussion about the band, live shows, its recordings or bootlegs, etc. You can buy, sell or trade here. You can even post eBay links. If it's about the Bunnymen, it goes here.

my point, not well made I grant you, waffling and all that, was not big label vs indie but not necessarily Warners, there were, and are, other big labels around, or at least ones with enough clout. Also that Drummond had some sort of vision, and could talk his way to cash. I dont think the band had any vision beyond wanting to be in a band. Which is a good approach, quality wise. But now, they seem to be surrounded by a bunch of mates who are no more than road managers (obviously, file that one under under wtf do I know) and there is nobody in that pivotal role.

And as to the question, why do they bother, well I think that after thirty years you have to accept thats what they do, and presumably they make enough money at it to carry on. Plus there must be a few bob in those soundtracks (though a couple of adverts wouldn't go amiss). Plus it seems that these days they are given a sort of grudging respect both by the press and the telly.

Its impossible to compare the indie labels now with the ones in the 80's.Stock Aitken and Waterman killed the DIY ethic when Kylie got to the top of the indie charts. An 'indie' label is say Domino, who have one of the countries biggest selling acts,The Arctic Monkeys,on their roster. We're not talking Crispy Ambulance here!Back then 'indie' meant record a demo, get some singles pressed and call yourself a label. It was a way of getting promotion and a proper deal.

In the 80's major labels gave bands time to develop such as The Cure,REM,The Bunnymen etc.The differnence now is that the business strategy is one of turning an instant buck or the band gets dropped(cf The Futureheads). The Bunnymen have a limited number of fans who buy their new music but a much larger number who will go and see them live.So why Warners wanted them in the first place is beyond me,except to be the pet band of the MD.And look where it got him!

Demand will dictate which label they go for but they need to get the record out sharpish.

No. Please check out the kranky label and now sub pop is back to the DIY for example. There are plenty of niche DIY labels out there. You are going by the ones you know that have become big.

There are PLENTY more like this - that fans of a certain taste get into (metal blade for super heavy metal for example)

Thats the sound of the Bunnymen being dropped.
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Let's sober up here. An indie label did them no good for Flowers and Siberia and a major is no guarantee of success especially for an 80's band with 50 year old men. As I recall the size of halls from Evergreen > Siberia was an ever decreasing number.

I still think the best thing would be to forgo all that and just release it for free, and then they can fund their own tour by first opening for one of these younger more popular bands that owe their very existence to the Bunnymen. That would get them visibility and exposure in the US market and boost it in Europe.

I know this is going to upset a lot of people - but had those albums really been any good they would have sold.

Agreed - nothing could save those albums.

The next album will come free with The Mail On Sunday - you heard it here first

Didn't he open for Coldplay?
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

I'm not suggesting this is the truth but could it be Warners dropped them because the new album lacks real quality?Nobody has heard it have they? When we finally get to hear it will anyone still care?It could be released at least two years after recording so the band will stuggle to get any enthusiasm to tour it properly. This is probably why Mac is going around talking about the new songs he's been writing. The Fountain's arrival could end up being as monumental as a piss in the breeze if the management arent careful.Get it out over the internet now.£6 -£7 digital download and then move on.

re Flowers-worst Bunnymen album. But Siberia is class.
