Can't stop listening to their cover of Tim Hardin's "Hang on to a Dream"

Haunting.

That song bores the shit out of me! Now "Avalanche" is white hot. Best post 97 song for sure.

You're right about "Avalanche".

And the man still had some range.

Listen to "Silver" - though not one of my favorite tracks, he still had that wail to him.

So, it was post-Avalanche, pre-Flowers that he started sliding

I'm trying to remember what avalanche sounds like.

have to dig it out from the bottom of the pile labelled 'stuff i never listen to'

doesn't it have the doo doo doo bits?

they are better than the rest of the words

if my memory serves me correctly

almost as bad as the Oasis backing vocals!

other than that the song wasn't too bad. had some cool Will parts on it.

yeah, i hated those! they ruined the track in my opinion. i thought Mac could have done a much better job himself, like on older tracks with loads of layers of his own vocals. i think that would have been much better. i like the song a lot, but just always hated those backing vocals.

i shouldn't say they ruined the 'track'......but at least that part of the song!

reworking older songs is a lazy way to pad an album or ep and the claim they were chosen by the fans is laughable. Anybody recall choosing that batch of songs?

Avalanche is fantastic. Will's guitar work is amazing and Mac sounds like he's possessed. I'm not usually one for do, do, do, do bits but it works. My only complaint is the sound is a bit muddy and could use a bit of touching up.

Chezza

If I had known at the time I would have also said anything but:

All My Colours (Zimbo), Silver, Angels And Devils

Maybe next time around we can get them to re-do:

People Are Strange, Flowers and the Game

Never liked the Avalanche ep myself. Hang Onto A Dream sounded very spooky. Good take on It's All Over Now, Baby Blue as well and completely different to the Bunnymen live version from the 80s (largely due to loss in Mac's vocal range). Too soft drumming on Zimbo (I wondered if that was done on purpose as kind of stating that nobody should copy Pete de Freitas' drumming like on the original version). As for Avalanche the song, that showed Mac's vocals at their worst. Somebody else doing the higher doo doo doos with Mac chirping in with a couple of croaky doo doos at the end of the chorus. De da da doo doo. Started off alright but then sounded like it had been made up on the spot in the recording studio out of a half written song.

Hang on to a dream is top.Avalanche-not my fave by a country mile. You have to remember that the cd was released when the Bunnymen had no label, dwindling fans and was a reminder that the band were still there and re-grouping.It was one of the first internet only releases by a band fighting for its life. The tour in late '99 was electric,a two fingered salute to people writing them off .The Wolverhampton gig remains one of my favourites ever. After Ocean Rain had ended I turned to my mate and just said"fucking hell-that was brilliant".He nodded in agreement.Never better live since then.
