odd food where your live

Does anyone enjoy the odd food that only seems popular in your locale? I was thinking of this when someone mentioned White Castles in another thread.

I realize this doesn't beat haggis or lutefisk...but does anyone even really eat those things anymore? I guess I'm not talking weird food just odd food that never really took off anywhere but where you live. A regional specialty if you will.

We have this food in Cincinnati called a 3-Way (yeah I've heard all the jokes). Many places have this but a place called Skyline is known best for them.

It's a dish of spaghetti with a brown meat sauce on top, called Cincinnati chili but it's much thinner than what you might consider "chili". The "chili" has chocolate and cinnamon in the ingredients but you don't really taste them on their own. Then a BIG layer of shredded cheddar cheese is placed on top and you put hot sauce on it. If you add onions or beans its a 4-Way and a 5-Way is with beans and onions.

It took me a very long time to try one when I moved here as a teen years ago but I must say I really do enjoy this monstrosity. In fact, I am digesting one now. They sell it frozen and the chili in cans for expatriate consumption but it is not even close to the real thing if you ask me. You wouldn't want to eat this stuff all the time.

OK. down here there is BBQ or pulled pork. BBQ is cooked differently, depending on what part of the state you are in. On the coast, it has more of a vinegar base. Over here in the mountains it has a tomato base. And there are plenty of resturants that brag about having the best. When indulging, you must eat this with cole slaw and hush puppies (cornbread).

Oh, and sweet tea to wash it down.

I love the corn on the stick the street vendors sell. Covered in queso blanco and chile powder. And of course Modelo in a can.

She's right Jack. You can't claim amateur status while collecting prize money on the Boston Pancake circuit. You no longer do it for the purity. It's all about the money. God help you.

And of course Modelo in a can goes really well with Pico de Gallo

i just watched a show last week on the travel channel about the best BBQ places to go to... (http://www.travelchannel.com/Travel_Ide ... elIdeasFmt) all have it different, and all claim to be the best at what they do. Up here in the "north" they have BBQ places, and i love it, but i am not sure how authentic it is, considering i have never been to one of the "real" places in the south. and sweet tea is AWESOME!!! now i'm hungry...

anyway, one thing that is local to where i grew up is called a Panzarotti. it's even on wikipedia! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzarotti
it's basically a pizza turnover that they deep fry until crispy. so you are eating a fried pocket of sauce and cheese. not healthy at all, but it tastes damn good. franco's place was about a 10 minute walk from my house growing up.
