I've just been informed via e-mail by the author that Pete will be included in a book covering all the rock and rollers who died at the age of 27.

The history of rock & roll is incomplete without The 27s, but it has remained untold until now.
If you’re reading this you probably know that Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Kurt Cobain’s lives were cut short at age 27, but the same fate happened to thirty other musicians. Sure, they weren’t all equally famous, but every one of them pushed rock in new directions, leaving lasting legacies that continue to inspire fans and musicians. Pete was an incredible drummer, and the whole bunnymen sound changed when he died. The book sounds worth getting.

I just think it's for great for Pete to be recognized and included in the book.

I guess that age is ripe for that. Most musicians spend their teens striving for fame and recognition and then through their twenties, if they are lucky, get recognized for that work. Then as the pressure of fame wears on to keep delivering and lifestyles get more radical and wreckless, the whole thing can unravel pretty quickly.

That's how the book begins ;)

There's obviously no need to explain here why Pete de Freitas should be
included with the rest of The 27s, but with some people we encounter
comments such as this recent one from another site (we were not part of this
dialogue):

"The others that loosly fall into the club were just musicians. Like the
bassists from Uriah Heep and the Stooges and the drummer from Echo and The
Bunnymen - you wouldn't be able to name them."

He's right that most people aren't able to name Gary Thain, David Michael
Alexander, and Pete, but we really hope that The 27s will change that. The
poster errs when he says they were "just musicians." Thain is perhaps the
most amazing bassist from the classic rock era. Zander influenced Iggy a ton
and contributed significantly to the Stooges' first two albums (both of
which are considered classics and included in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest
Albums of All Time).

And Pete. Well, listen to his drumming and then spin anything else from the
'70s or '80s. He deliberately toned down excessive cymbal use as favored by
the stadium rockers of the '70s and largely avoided drenching his sound
through digital effects processors, which was all the rage during the '80s.
Instead he focused on using the tams for deep grooves and we argue that it
took until the '90s before drummers‹and DJs‹caught on to what Pete was up to
back there.

Our motivation is to tell the story of rock & roll in a novel way‹through
the lives and legacies of the thirty-four 27s. In Pete's case it helps that
he is not only a hard-hitting drummer in a successful band, but also
instigated one of rock's most debaucherous tales.
