Incidentally, we don't have an alternative word for the Internet, given that a Brit -- Sir Tim Berners-Lee -- was supposed to have invented it (even if he was working in the US for an American firm). He now works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sir Tim is nicknamed the "[God] father of the Web". Getonup, like a web machine. ow.

Actually, I think it's more accurate to say he invented the World Wide Web. I could swear he was working for CERN when he did that, but I could just be misremembering.

That thing about Al Gore saying he invented the internet is such an overblown out of context statement perpetuated by blowhards like Rush Limbaugh and the like for political attack purposes. He was just trying to say that as a congressman he helped champion and fund programs that were eventually to become what we now know as the internet. It's been widely debunked yet people still believe he said such a thing.

Vint Cerf, known as the father of the internet, has defended Gore's awkward statement.

He he, a bit of stereotyping there (along with "Tidy". eg Gavin & Stacey). That's the problem with stereotyping. The best one at the moment is the second series of Heroes on BBC2 with Peter Petrelli being discovered in the city of Cork in southern Ireland and meeting dodgy Irish thugs with guns who run a pub. And of course, this is all played out by American actors trying to do really heavy Belfast-type accents.

Most Irish people can't do a Cork accent.

He wasn't mumbling and I could understand him completely. I think he was talking to an American. He speaks more clearly when he knows he's talking to someone who doesn't understand English!
