A Real Band

Postby black francis » Sun Apr 20, 2008 3:22 pm

I've always thought the Bunnymen would benefit from signing up a couple of full fledged members to the band as opposed to a revolving door of session players. Is there anyone out there you would welcome as an official Bunnymen who contributed to the songwriting or would you rather they carry on as a two-some?

If they wanted to add J Mascis or Kevin Shields I could live with that. Though Will might not like that much.

I don't know who... but I think it would be better if they would function as a whole band again instead of Will just adding parts to Mac's songs.

Actually, the last time I saw them that they felt like a band... well, they really weren't the them they are now - It was the first Electrafixion tour in the US, with Mac on rhythm guitar

Isn't Will's stance on this "It's mine and Mac's band." ie everyone else does as they're told or they're out on their arse.

Peter Hook on bass would be awesome. It seems like he plays live with the Bunnymen whenever they cover Ceremony, which they did last year, I believe. New Order is pretty much dead aren't they? Sign him up!

He'd be probably my only semi-realistic choice. Kevin Shields would be beyond cool, but I don't think that would ever happen. It would blow my mind if he ever produced a Bunnymen album and /or played session guitar for them.

I dont think Hooky is realistic-his style is to lead songs and the Bunnymen would just end up sounding like NO.I remember a interview with Will once when he said for WAYGDWYF they basically recorded the first thing that came out of his guitar. With committment like that no wonder he didnt like the album!

I was going to say the same thing. I love Hooky, but his style is too distinctive to join the bunnymen.

I think they should keep the lineup as it is but integrate the new members into the band so that they feel ownership but I think Mac and Will's experience with personalities and people wanting to follow their own bliss feels destabilizing to them and they'd like to keep the core of the band as just Mac and Will. Unless they had been able to get Les back of course, which I doubt will ever happen.

I agree, I was actually thinking that while I made the original post. Hook plays his bass more like a guitar a lot of the time. It'd still be cool to see them collaborate, though.

I don't think the Bunnymen need a well-known drummer or bassist. Look at Finley, he's a great drummer, IMO. The problem is the bassist and drummer (most of the time) are relegated to secondary status in the mixes of pretty much all the new Bunnymen songs. Why? Because they're not original members? Well, then I guess you could argue they shouldn't put out anymore music under the Bunnymen name then. But that wouldn't be financially OK to do.

The Bunnymen were/are their best when it all comes together, guitar, bass, drums, vocals maybe keyboards.

Now a days it's vocals >>> guitar or keyboards >> drums > bass in the mix.
