The Smiths = overrated/Morrissey Solo = underrated

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Jack and I had this conversation last night and I stand by my claims that Morrissey solo is better than The Smiths.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Jack had all the Tecate that night. I kept it classy. I keep the Tecate in the truck.

I think that's crazy talk, although I've only heard about half of Morrissey's albums. Haven't been overly impressed, although he's definitely one of the best lyricists around.

Morrisey's stuff is hit and miss.

The Smiths - all four members shined just like the first four EATB albums.

Morrisey may be slightly under rated but the Smiths are where they should be.

I'm prepared to declare

Vive Hate
Bona Drag
Your Arsenal
Vauxhaul and I

as total classics.

Ringleader of the Tormentors
You Are the Quarry

are very strong albums

I like the tougher rockabilly vibe in Morrissey's solo work and find the Smiths to be a little too precious.

And Morrissey's voice is amazing, only getting better.

I'm going to see the Moz tomorrow (if the old feller makes it). Saw him during the Ringleader of the Tormentors tour and wasn't at all impressed (I know I'm biased but Mac at Zeligs was way better). I thought I'd better have another look in case he packs it in. Never got to see The Smiths live unfortunately (had a ticket for a cancelled gig in '86!) but there's very little of his solo stuff that I prefer to their output as a band. I sound really excited about hearing him again don't I?

I have a document refuting your entire post.

When I first broached this subject with Jack on Wednesday night, he slapped me down pretty quick.

Morrissey to me is the only rock star left. When I saw him at the Palladium besides being amazed at the number of Mexican dudes with pompadours, I was amazed by his charisma. He had the audience eating out of his hands. It was perfect in every way. Of course the first time he lets me down I'll start posting about him like I do the Bunnymen now.

Not looking forward to that day.

OMG I thought that was just the wine coolers talking.

I've seen moz only once... I have to say that his voice sounds amazing in live performance than the studio tracks.... When they played "bigmouth strikes again"
a few years back... it gave me shivers right to my bones.... its really that great!!

Other than MAC, MOZ has one of the best voice I've heard.... I mean, I've listened to a lot of live recordings and stuff... but in actual live performance... its a different experience.....its hard to describe... but really.. he's got an amazing voice..

As for guitarist, I would rate MARR as number 1.... Moz current band can't play guitar
as good as MARR... if you listen to This Charming Man on youtube from last year
or this year.... it sucks...

By the way, if I'm not mistaken MOZ and MAC are about the same age... they both look good too!! Other than the SMITHS and Bunnymen...

I would rank New Order on my top 3...

Nice to know that we have some MOZ fans here... and yes I agree Moz voice gets better and better...

I think MAC's singing is better this year too (compared to last year)... I would hope that he would quit smoking........Men tend to get better as they age!

I saw the cd with his recent array of b-saides. The three from Irish Blood are on there. Great songs. Is it the case as it was with Belly/Tanya Donnelly where the b-sides and alternate takes were often better than the album ones?
