As a newbie to the bootlegging world, I have to admit it is very easy to get high quality recordings if a) you have the nerve to pass through security, b) are willing to spend some $$ on a quality recording device and microphone and c) potentially have it confiscated. Perhpas my thinking is twisted, but I don't see these recordings as taking away business from the bands but instead provides listeners with another avenue to their music, getting/keeping people interested in the band and perhaps causing them to go out and either buy the official releases or see them live. That certainly is what happened with me and The Bunnymen: I began with the bootlegs downloaded off the net, causing me to buy all their albums and many singles/EPs, leading me to see them live.
I personally don't approve downloading the studio albums of bands. I'd rather pay the money knowing I'm supporting them to hopefully continue making more music. I don't mind paying their wage if I continue getting a thrill from it. But I too have violated this principal, as recently as last week when I downloaded Alizée's "Gourmandises" just to learn more about her. My mistake. It must not be the audio that I like.
