Old Bootlegs - thanks

Whoever posted old bootlegs--thanks!!!

I don't have a full collection of bootlegs posted here, but whoever posted Boston 1984 is my hero since the Bunnymen stopped playing most of Porcupine and this has a few gems.

I don't know how people did it back then. Nowadays it's so freaking easy with teeny tiny recorders.

Nowadays bands full studio albums are getting leaked a full two months before release, and rather than people making cassette recordings for each other, rapid share is killing careers. It's kind of awful.

As a newbie to the bootlegging world, I have to admit it is very easy to get high quality recordings if a) you have the nerve to pass through security, b) are willing to spend some $$ on a quality recording device and microphone and c) potentially have it confiscated. Perhpas my thinking is twisted, but I don't see these recordings as taking away business from the bands but instead provides listeners with another avenue to their music, getting/keeping people interested in the band and perhaps causing them to go out and either buy the official releases or see them live. That certainly is what happened with me and The Bunnymen: I began with the bootlegs downloaded off the net, causing me to buy all their albums and many singles/EPs, leading me to see them live.

I personally don't approve downloading the studio albums of bands. I'd rather pay the money knowing I'm supporting them to hopefully continue making more music. I don't mind paying their wage if I continue getting a thrill from it. But I too have violated this principal, as recently as last week when I downloaded Alizée's "Gourmandises" just to learn more about her. My mistake. It must not be the audio that I like.

It harms artists if people don't end up purchasing a ticket to go see them and if people are selling the bootleg without authorization, then they are making an unauthorized profit. But in the case of the Bunnymen, I love how they sounded back when they were rising stars. Don't we all? I treasure being able to hear what I missed. But it didn't stop me from collecting all of their studio albums. Ocean Rain was so different live as opposed to with the orchestra in the studio and I love both.

Having gone to a great many concerts, you can sneak recording devices in a great deal of the time provided that they are small. You can get amazing quality with these. you can even have cameras so long as they aren't professional cameras with removable lenses. It makes it that much more amazing that these old bootlegs are floating around considering the tech that was available back then.
