I got the impression (this is just my feeling, nothing based in fact) that both sides were very pissed off (that means angry, not drunk) about how things turned out.
First, Will was angry because Ian left the band and, in my opinion, Will got back at Ian in the only way he knew how -- by replacing him and not changing the band's name. (Of course, this doesn't take into account what role WEA played in urging or forcing Will and Les to carry on as is.)
Of course, this pissed Ian off because Will/Les continued the band without him and so he did what he does best -- bad mouth them at every opportunity.
And, as Noel noted in the interview, neither side won.
