An Appointment with The Waterboys

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

An Appointment with The Waterboys

Postby crystal daze » Fri Mar 16, 2012 11:59 am

Looking forward to seeing The Waterboys in a couple of weeks. I read somewhere the show will be in two parts. One playing from an Appointment with Mr Yeats, and one playing the old favourites. What do ya know - another 80s band that are proud to play and showcase their recent album.

I'm seeing them in Liverpool on the 24th.
David Sylvian cancelled his tour and we were going over to see him in Manchester on the 23rd and on to Liverpool for the match on Sat - hotels and flights booked.
Went looking for an alternative and found out the Waterboys are playing in the Liverpool Philharmonic on Sat.
I'm looking forward to it but I find the Yeats concept a bit dodgy to be honest.
Still, I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised. Will let you know how we get on :)

If they should turn up and do A Girl Called Johnny, Pagan Place, Pan Within etc., I don't care what they do to Yeats - I'll be happy.
Every word is like an unnecessary stain on silence and nothingness.

Indeed!

Sorry your original plan didn't work out, but hopefully the Waterboys will be a good salvage. Aye, let me know how it goes.

Someone mentioned elsewhere that Mac needs a lyric writer - dodgy as tampering with Mr Yeats sounds it's better than going down the current Mac lyric road. (Not that Mr. Scott is in danger of doing that).

This is all true! At least we know the lyrics won't be atrocious, whether they're by Mike Scott or Yeats.

going to see them on wednesday, its a shame the only waterboys track played on the radio is the whole of the moon, not very reflective of most of their music.as for the mr yeats thing hmmm a bit pretentious maybe but it will different!

I was holding back. But here goes:
The first set was great - Rags, All the Things, Thrill is Gone/healing Has Begun, Girl Called Johnny, Pan within - not nec. in that order and there were a few more that I can't remember.

The band were tight and very professional, Steve Wickham maintains his godlike status!
The sound wasn't great so that, unfortunately, you could only really hear him when he was playing solo.

Mike Scott, on the other hand behaved like a complete tosser, starting the second set again because he came out on stage two bars too early into the intro. He made every one leave the stage and do the intro again, proclaiming, "for technical reasons I, Mike Scott, (hand on chest) leader of The Waterboys would like to do that intro. again.

I had had my reservations about the Yeats thing but went in there with an open mind. After the first set, I was totally up for it. However, after four songs I couldn't take any more and scarpered before he killed The Lake Isle of Innishfree for me.
Fitting Yeats to Tom-Waits-meets-Jaques-Brel (no wonder he's been praising Camille O' Sullivan of late!!) and making The Song of Wandering Aengus sound like Dylan wrote it (a haaay-zel wooooo-oid) are not enhancements of Yeats' lyric by any stretch of the imagination. To me it all ended up sounding very contrived and juvenile.

I will say, though, that his voice is a great as ever.

Thanks Kook. Looking forward to the first set anyway. After that it could be another night at the Concert Hall, another diva strop.

what a excellent night, the first set a collection of old classics with fantastic rendition of "a girl called johnny"
then came the Mr Yeats part, which i thought was very entertaining as well.really enjoyed some of the imagery and antics on stage ,even if i wasn't sure what it meant
mike Scott with a 3 face mask,Steve wickham and James hallawell keyboard player also wearing masks and having a fiddle/keyboard duel all very entertaining.what Yeats or anybody who is really into his poetry would make of it i don't know.
Steve Wickham was fantastic, as was Mike Scott and as kook said his voice is superb! probably musically one of the best bands i have seen!
a couple of encores including a wonderfully powerful "don't bang the drum" and a man is in love, whole of the moon, and finishing with a crowd assisted fisherman's blues.
there was even a instrumental version of silver played during the interval
