If we're putting "What Are You Going To Do...." in the Mac solo category, then yes, sometimes, and I'll take Mac solo over "Flowers" any day.

but we're not. we have a majority vote on that - and it says so on the cover, so it must be true - even if little willy doesn't have his piccie on it and mac made a mistake in not wearing his shades, and presumably dressed himself without his specs on too, thus not seeing what a dick he looks. Good call though - way to get a discussion going. Anyone remember reverberation? Now theres a bunnymen album and a half and mac's not even on it.

Do we??? I know what the album says, and I will remind you that Milli Vanilli also had an album with two guys on it who didn't sing one note, as we all found out later. Soooo, you're not convincing me.* And I like the suit on the cover, btw.

*but it is a Bunnymen album

Anyone who prefers Mac solo to anything needs to apply some of these:

saw them supporting the who once. Well 'saw' is a bit of an exaggeration, most of the time was spent at the bar waiting for the main attraction.

Well I like WAYGTD but I certainly wouldn't trade it for the first 4 albums.

I wonder if there is ANYONE who prefers Mac's solo albums/songs over the Bunnymen stuff.
I believe, for example our black francis enjoys Frank Black solo over the Pixies material. With the Mac stuff it just seems like something is always missing but maybe that's because he doesn't assemble a proper band, it's either the Bunnymen backing guys minus Will (Slideling) or it's mostly him (Candleland) or a whole new band thrown together with no chemistry (Mysterio).

You mean to say that 'our' Black Francis is not the 'real' Black Francis? I always presumed he was the real thing but in reality he's just a knob with a Star Wars fixation and too much time on his hands. Oh, and ridiculous windows.

You're out of my will Billy. You were gonna get the smaller of the two windows but now Scouser gets them both. A shame too as I was gonna have a real nice stained piece of glass depicting me as a Jedi fighting the Sith and banging Maris Brood at the same time added to it.

And yes I prefer Frank Black solo (his work with the Catholics in particular) over the Pixies. Good old fashioned rock and roll gets me every time.

I've always viewed Mac's early solo stuff as sort of a guilty pleasure. None of it is great, IMO, or in the same ballpark with the original lineup's output. Although a case could be made for some of his early solo stuff over newer "Bunnymen" material.

I just don't think he's a great songwriter or lyricist. Definitely not anymore at least. I remember reading an interview a long, long time ago where Mac said he'd like other songwriters to write songs for him to record, I think he mentioned Nick Cave. So, I think he maybe even realizes (when he's not deluding himself) that he can't write great stuff single-handedly.

so perhaps we need a new thread - things i attribute to different artists on my ipod because i'm more comfortable/find it more amusing with it that way.
