Aah, the old 80s white terry towelling socks and black slip-on shoes. They were all the rage in the UK probably up to 1985. I wore them at school, as did everyone else.

I once attempted to chat up a bird in Birmingham-I had the black leather and white socks/black shoes in 87-"fuck off,youve got white socks on' came the reply.You're right GP.They were soooo 1985.

Think that was the same night I tried to get into a nightclub and was told "come back when you've ironed your shirt".Mr Popular me that night.

Aaaggh the memories of the pain of rejection.I had a mate in tears once in my car "whats wrong with me....Ive asked five women out this week and they've all said no"....I couldnt stop laughing as this was from my mate into Yngwie Malmsteen,hardcore porn,the Wolves and who once hired from Wolvo library the memoirs of Enoch Powell,Mein Kampf and a book on Maggie Thatcher...."erm I dunno.....is it something you say?".

I do remember that white terry towelling socks + black slip on shoes became a fashion faux pas after a while. So I quite understand why you got turned down by that chick. Same thing with snow-washed jeans, they were as widely worn and mostly associated with the "Sharon and Barry" brigade (I guess the 80s version of chavs). I didn't wear them as a young ghostie, thankfully.

And before Voodoo Billy jumps in, no I didn't wear a top hat and tails either.
