Will the real Ian McCulloch please stand up?

Sometimes he comes across like some cool French intellectual philosopher. The next minute he comes across as a complete chav.

He seemed quite intellectual in interviews and through lyric writing when he was a mere whipper snapper. He was cool, in what was a geeky way and even with a handful of O-levels or CSEs to his name, he still appeared very intelligent. Later with the Bunnymen reforming, he morphed into Liam Gallagher, the lad about town, a scally, complete with the swagger and fag hanging out of his mouth. Jeremy Kyle would be proud.

Yup.
And it's such a pity. He really didn't need to sink to their level.
Every word is like an unnecessary stain on silence and nothingness.

Oasis were big news back then and I remember Mac praising Liam at the time, Mac obviously just wanted to be like his hero.

I sold out long ago for three magic beans.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Heard from a very reliable source that Liam hates Mac now and regrets doing him the favor of singing backup on "NLF," which helped the song chart so high.

You think so? As one of the "what the kids want" brigade at the time, NLF was the first Bunnymen single I ever bought. Liam Gallagher singing backing vocals at the end of the song made no difference. It was a great song at the time coming off the back of Britpop and standing up well to material coming out from other bands like The Verve. It got a lot of airplay as well, including on Radio 1. You couldn't escape the song - it was played everywhere.

No question that it's a phenomenal song, but that entire album was strong.
Somehow I don't think it's a coincidence that the one song that got the most airplay
also happened to have the biggest British rock star of the '90s on it too...
but perhaps I'm just being cynical.

I guess some didn't like it per se. I loved it at the time, but preferred Watchtower the b-side.

But I'm also now sick of it now especially that wanna play football for the coach, Rafael Benitez is the coach bollocks. Benitez indeed. I guess even an ordinary Liverpool fan wouldn't even sing his praises anymore.

Still, it's better than "Don't Let It Get You Down", which ranks as one of the worst songs that I have ever heard, beaten only by "What If We Are?" and "The Idolness of Gods".
