But the guy gives Bon Jovi a 9 out of 10.

On first blush, it seems more a review of McCulloch's current (sad) lifestyle, than of the album. I do wonder if his review of the album would have differed, were it not filtered through that lens.

At its core, I don't know if I'd dispute the review. I do feel that Ocean Rain is somewhat over-produced and overly glossy - second only to THE GREY ALBUM.

I absolutely HATE it when people review things that way.

Buy you're wrong about OR, it is truly a great work. It really was one of the greatest albums ever made.

THE Greatest Album Ever Made, is what the advertisement said.

Remember, I voted Porcupine as my favorite - and I started the Rob Zombie thread - and I dropped the forum's first F-bomb. Again, there's no accounting for taste.

What is supposed to be sad about Mac's current lifestyle?

The review characterized him as haunting the nightspots of Liverpool like an alcoholic coke-headed ghost. I believe this account of his current condition to be accurate.

But isn't that standard fare for a fellow in his line of work?

Hopefully not at 48-49 years of age.

Not that I won't be that guy at that age. Just you'll never hear about it.

I like and agree with the reviewer who said the something like "the greatest album ever? history may judge otherwise. The greatest orchestrated album ever. yes"

Or something like that.

Very moody stuff that Ocean Rain.

When I found that old Usenet review on the Bunnymen from 1983 there was another one from 1984 from a fan and a reply from another fan who did not like the new direction the Bunnymen went on Ocean Rain.

Here is the link:

Here is the text of the posts.

Has anyone heard Echo and the Bunnymen's latest effort - "Ocean Rain"?
Being a devout Bunnymen fan, I'm beginning to get worried that they're
about to take a serious nosedive. I've heard two singles from the new
l.p. - "Killing Moon" and "Silver", both of which I think are far inferior
to anything on "Porcupine", "Heaven Up Here", and "Crocodiles".

They WERE brilliant in concert. I saw them March 30 in Boston and had
to catapult the performance up to "the best concert I was ever at".

Yep, sad to say, "Ocean Rain" is a bit of a stiff. Lotsa
bombast, walls of noise, and McCullough's voice right out
front where you can hear the inane lyrics. This baby smacks
of self-importance. Chances are the record could have been better
if
a) They'd talked Shankar into putting more violin on this (as on Porcupine)

b) They'd rechanneled all the energy they spent in the press whining about
how lousy other bands who sounded remotely like them were.

Perhaps deprived of the chance to overdo things live, they are as
exhilarating as you say, but this chunk of dirgedom doesn't hint at it.

I think it's great myself.

It is not very nice that he is portrayed this way. Yet, we all have our own opinions and are not supposed to be judgemental of them.

Hey was that the chick who I tracked down recently? If this is the same person, she is currently an online movie reviewer. She even wrote back to me.

Yeah and as I recall she still sticks by her assessment. I thought that was you but I couldn't remember.

That always happens to a band tho doesn't it? The teenyboppers left the Beatles when they got "weird". Dylan fans left when he went electric. Other bands get more popular and some of the original fans dislike the new material as too slick. Bands that don't change a bit over the years don't last that long. The Ramones would be an exception to that, even with all the line-up changes

Yes it always happens. I find that a fascinating subject. Fans are both your lifeblood and the death of you when you are a performer. I have always made the joke that the band became too commercial after Side A of Crocodiles. Okay I didn't say it was a hilarious joke.
