Best/worst albums of 2007

I don't know if they can actually reproduce their songs as they are on the cds. Or if they'd want to. I have seen them three times - the third time at Fuji Fest they played 4 songs in an hour and a half.

It was not a pleasant experience.

I interviewed Lee Ronaldo when I was an undergrad for a local ent. rag. Well almost. He hung up on me. John Lydon did the same thing.

Can;t say I blame them. I would have, too.

Whenever I'm tempted to congratulate myself for liking a new band, I remind myself that I like them because they sound just like the old bands I like.

Or - as scientists call it - the Interpol effect.

2007 was pretty dire. Interpol played it safe. Wombats blew it. I quite liked The Twang but I never listen to it. Best "new" album was The Coral and thats rescued by the closing trio of tracks after an indifferent middle section. So, all in all, abit shit if I'm honest.

Best album I bought was Jagged by Gary Numan (though it came out in 06 I think) and the worst Editors.

i didn't buy too much this year, and what i did had come out previously... i kinda like the editors new album, but it's not nearly as good as back room... so it's not high on my list, but i don't have much of a list. BRMC - baby 81 is pretty good, but i just got that for christmas... so i have only listened once.

If you get bored of current music buy some older albums.So much good music we've never ever listened to.Next on the list is the Nuggets San Francisco boxset just released.Supposed to be extremely good.£40 on another sixties compilation or £10 on the Pigeon Detectives?No contest.

BRMC made me feel that way and so did Kasabia. BRMC is throw back rock so that is out as far as a "new sound" and everyone insisted that Kasabian sounded like the Stone Roses - which I don't get.

The Harold Budd / Robin Guthrie cds are a amazing but then again Guthrie still sounds like 80s guitar and Haroild Budd is pushing 70 doing what he did on The Pearl with Brian Eno.

Ok- UNKLE is the closest I can come to saying I liked something slightly new sounding.
Shit- even that had Ian Astbury from the Cult.

I think there are still some bands and artists that have been around a while are still making vital music today like Frank Black/Black Francis, Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr., Spiritualized, The Flaming Lips and Front 242. It may not always work but they are still challenging themselves.

And not to sound like a broken record but a couple of bands I consider to be "new" have made me enthusiastic about music again are the Exploding Hearts (I can't stress enough how exciting their music is) and the Fiery Furnaces. I really dig Clap Your Hands Say Yeah but their second album was just so-so.

Nope, I am the aging rocker I despised in my youth.

Now, now. Perhaps it's not really aging rocker syndrome (and I have to admit I've been feeling some of that this year too ... just leave me to my Jethro Tull albums and I'll be happy ), but just shear boredom with what's out there today? To me, so much of it is throwaway, and derivative. Where's the WOW factor?

The only newish band that made me perk up my ears this year was Arcade Fire. Kaiser Chiefs live on a radio program were also quite fun and energetic. On record, tho, a bit commercial. Too bad. And BRMC were great live, opening for the Mary Chain.


And let's face it. Rock and roll has been around for 50+ years now, never mind what the "Seven Ages of Rock" claims. There's lots of aging rockers running around

I don't know 4 of them. (2. 5. 6. and 10.) The others I've heard through my daughter who also introduced me to Ambulance Ltd. which I liked. Too bad they split up.

Did I mention Frank Black/Black Francis? Who woulda thought the guy from the Pixies would be recording albums in Nashville with legendary session musicians who backed Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.
