It's a bizarre scenario to create a forum that seems set on permanently attacking and running down the central talent (MAC) that has kept producing amazing music for 30 years.
It's a respect and a common decency thing. All the members mentioned were/are amazing talents. There needs to be more mutual respect all around, them toward each other and from the "fans."

If you don't like the post-reunion stuff as well as the early years, fair fucking enough.
But find a new drum to beat.
I too adore the glory years, but I get a lot more out of the poetry of the latter stuff as a person of maturing years myself. "How can the words not be the first thing that gets you about a song?"

It must be damn annoying to have a near perfect band whose most devoted fans are the ones who make a fucking hobby of being armchair "expert" critics - of music and even your personal life.

In closing my rant, let me add - Will's no fucking saint either; Slideling and WAYGTDWYL are sublime; and I feel ever so much better.

You all poke a lot of fun, sometimes mean-spirted, at everyone and everything else; let's see that critical eye turned on this forum itself.

Paradoxically, I've enjoyed and been annoyed by this forum for ages.
Cheers to all!

How long have you been lurking but not posting? I thought only Carys did that.
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

In spite of this forum's supposed faults, it is here you came to express yourself in an unfettered manner, and here your post stands, un-edited, subject only to the criticism of other forum members.

I still can't get over that "armchair music expert" remark. If any of that lot (or that one person under multiple names) that posted last night actually works in the music business, no wonder it's generally so shite - they are so obviously detached from the ordinary punter who buy the music, follow the bands and attend the gigs and have every right to pass comment and make a judgement. I thought there was only one Simon Cowell, seems like he has an army of mini-mees kicking around as well, who go as far as posting their drivel and propaganda on unofficial forums.

What are you talking about? We have no right to pass comment or make judgements, just shut up and lap it up like a good little fan and just be thankful for Mac.
(you don't reckon Mac is dictating these posts to someone do you?)

Well if that is the case, I think I'll take the sound advice of the last person who did that and won't bother with the Bunnymen again. The day when somebody or someone associated with a band start posting heavily pro threads to try and put a bit of positive spin onto a very jokey, sarcastic and occasionally critical forum while telling you off as if you are a half witted fan, well then that's enough for me.

That concerted effort last night was about as bad as that comment on BOF that Echo & The Bunnymen are a "product" not a bunch of musicians or a band, or to you and me a can of happy shopper coke flavoured fizzy drink. I think I'll stick to a can of coca cola thank you.

Never been a fan of Lucozade. Bit of a vomit inducing drink. Mountain Dew (or Mtn Dew as its branded) Cherry Fusion now that's a bit more alternative, not afraid to try something different, dark, in your face and a taste to remember that will make you come back for more. And if that''s not enough there's other flavours to give you something different to what you have drunk before the last time you had some. Especially nice with a chicken in a basket.

I think of bands in the same way I think of footballers. George Best during his ultimately fatal decline was not physically fit enough to capture his former glories.
There is no "Special Olympics" for footballers, or singers. The Bunnymen were at the cutting edge of music. A superhuman voice is part of the job description. Right now they wouldn't cut it as pub rockers.
If Thom Yorke or Richard Ashcroft were to smoke away their voice they would not only face equally savage criticism, but probably be sacked.
The only way the Bunnymen are going to regain their former glories is to get some powerful guest singers on their next album.
As for "Simon Cowell mini-me's" I have respect for him because he tells it like it is, and does delusional singers a favour by bursting their bubble. Now be honest. What do you think would happen if Mac got up on the X-Factor and tried to sing with his present voice?
The fact that we all spend so much time moaning shows how much love there is for the band and Mac. Face it, we are still obsessed with the man. He really is one of the most unique human beings ever to exist on the planet.
On "Later with Jools Holland" they seemed a lot better than on the album. If Mac gave up smoking perhaps there might still be hope?
As for the contribution of Les and Pete, it was invaluable.

Look, I don't give two shits if the Bunnymen never again release an album of new material. I remember Will and I sitting down in a bar in Portland - he was in a funk over Flowers not selling (and about touring). He said he'd gone to see Ray Davies and the Kinks play and they put on a great show. But nobody was lining up to buy the new Kinks album. The fans were there to hear the old stuff.

Problem is - Will hates touring and Mac loves it (or he did back then - for all the wrong reasons).

If Echo and the Bunnymen were a great touring act - putting on a fun, energetic show (with a varied setlist) night after night, without Mac being a whiny bitch about the lighting, the sound, the fans - I would have no real complaints.

Conversely, fans wanted to hear new music from The Shins that was basically copying The Kinks.
