Dark Side of The Moon by the Flaming Lips released

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Goddamnit Scouser. First My Bloody Valentine and now the Flaming Lips.

You can still like the good stuff. Every band has some crap to contend with.

Says the Comsats fan
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

First off, Mr. Brian - can you watch the language? K, thanks.

I have to agree with BF on this one. Like too much Bono, Coyne is reaching saturation point. A couple of years ago, he was preaching something political from the stage, incoherently. Dark Side would not be so bad if I didn't find myself fast forwarding through half the tracks on Embryonic. (I praised it too much too soon.) A song like "Powerless" and the packaging almost make it bearable.

It is less the FL's output and more having known about them for twenty years, I have little patience for throw away stuff when they are becoming so prevalent.

Woe is me.

The Lips have had it both ways for too long. They were on 90210, play corporate parties and selling their songs to companies like Merrill Lynch while bashing the corporate mentality and Bush's policies while still maintaining artistic integrity.

That said up to Yoshimi they were brilliant.

Something about that new video bothered me.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

This anti-corporate music stance doesn't play out anymore. And I don't think Coyne was really part of it.

*spoiler alert - lots of pontificating that lacks a central thesis*

Access to recording equipment and people that can help a band record is incredibly prevalent meaning that lots of great music is getting out there without the corporate giants being the gate keepers.

That being siad, Over twenty years of The Falming Lips doing their thing, it makes sense that was once left of the dial is now, at times, dead center. It doesn't mean the music is any less aesthetically valuable. Sometimes a new sound works immediately while in other cases it take time.

But this doesn't really apply to the Lips, does it? Like BF said, they had it both ways. They have been on Warner Brothers since the early 90s, if the selling out argument means being on a major label.

Pop music is commerce. But I don't think Coyne ever had a problem with that.

So what does the future of the record industry hold if McDonald’s and Wal-Mart are no longer the devil?

I think there is an idea that’s been set in people’s minds, you know, “Those rich motherfuckers. Fuck, if we can rip them off and get our music for free we deserve it because record companies are so evil.” And it’s been perpetrated by artists all along. So I think that that’s not going to be reversed: the idea that you can download music and get it for free. I think more artists will embrace that and make it part of the way they work

Agree with most of that WAH

Doesnt alter the fact that Yoshimi is stoner shit dressed up as some sort of artistic statement.

I've been a fan of the band since 1984 so it's hard for me to give up on them. What I always did like about the Lips seems to have been gone for quite some time. They were always able to mix it up and be folky, be hard rock, or just plain weird and always be recognizable as the Flaming Lips. But just like WAH speaking too soon regarding Embyonic, I feel I spoke too soon on Dark Side (it sounds rushed and parts are unlistenable).
I think the Lips have been putting out Yoshimi-Lite for a while. Everything they have done since Yoshimi just seems like a bad b-side to that album and they have ceased to be that creative anymore. I don't think I've been thrilled with them since Yoshimi came out actually. The show on that tour in 2002 was probably one of my favorite shows of all time.

I think part of the greatness of the Flaming Lips was the fact that they had many line-up changes over the years around Michael Ivins and Wayne Coyne. Maybe it's time to mix it up again.
