Not a fan of the beard myself. What's funny is Ian slammed Pete DeFreitas once for having a beard.

Referring to criticism of doing the World Cup song with the Spice Girls:

"It certainly wasn't as embarrassing as Pete de Freitas' soddin' beard on
that last Bunnymen tour in 1987. That was wrong, singing with Sporty Spice
wasn't. It just meant I got to go to the World Cup matches and sing 'Three Lions on a Shirt' along with the rest of the chippie and piehead dudes."
