Viewing site on a netbook

Postby JackT » Tue Aug 18, 2009 8:53 pm

Hey Bri,

Browsing the site on a netbook, I realize how very tall the site banner is (I am refering to the entire top pane including the banner, FAQ, Search , History Chimes, etc.)

As this takes up almost half of the screen height on my netbook, would you consider a slimmed down version that is better for browsing on smaller devices?

When I get a chance I can take a closer look.

Those netbooks are just 600 pixels tall I think and that entire section is about 260 pixels That entire section is predetermined by the phpbb application for the most part. The best I could probably do is reduce the banner itself or remove it and place text there instead, but it is only 107dpi. That would not improve things much even if I somehow reduced it by 50 or took it out.

So what I'm hearing is that you will design a completely new site optimized for portable devices? Wow that is sweet.

Jack IS the Villiers Terrace Forum.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Don't bother, he's masturbating outside of your house.

I said I would consider a change once I get a chance and could take a look. You will likely get it about the same time you get a reimbursement for that festival show you paid for and the Bunnymen didn't show.

Ok, I fiddled around with it because I can't resist a challenge. I was able to reduce the header area quite a bit moving some things around, reducing the image and moving it over to the left and other voodoo.
It also gave me a reason to remove the "new" from History Chimes, since it wasn't new anymore and take out the "UserGroups" in the menu that came stock with the phpbb forum software. We never had any UserGroups. I left that PayPal button down at the bottom for everyone's convenience too. Enjoy that netbook.

Where I work, we get calls from people using netbooks having display issues with our product. We have to tell them "sorry, minimum requirements are 1024x768". Maybe they should hire me or something.

That was very nice of you to do that, Mr. B. Are you okay with the way it looks?

Have you thought about making VT into an iPhone app?

There is a mobile add-on for the forum, but it seems like a lot of work for me so I will pass. When i view it on my blackberry it's crowded but usable.
