Sonic Yoof

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

The Guardian article is over the top with its praise of the band.

A little more accurate - imho

Wasn't Pavement on Matador? Wonder if Ibold had anything to do with the band going there.

Yup.

What did you find OTT in the Guardian article?

I am not as big of a fan as the writer so the praise felt like too much.

I know you don't like them; just wondering what you found particularly OTT.

I would like to like them, but they are so out of tune - it is like bad jazz to me. Also - I am uncomfortable saying this because I don't know their output post Dirty - but have they put out anything that really is memorable since the early 90s?

"they continued to put out records - most of which, Ranaldo acknowledges, would have got any other band dropped"

Rather Ripped was great. Sonic Nurse half great.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

I like Rather Ripped. Daydream Nation is the only other album I have. My understaning is that those are at the more accessible end of the SY spectrum.

Goo is arguably their most accessible album.

They are so out of tune - all the time. It is as bad as Seals & Croft and in some weird way sounds the same.

They don't use conventional tunings...

Anyhoo, great show last night at Massey Hall (so the sound was good). They played all the new album and a few older songs. Ended with a blistering version of Death Valley 69. Bill Gates is a great drummer.
