The Obligatory Depeche Mode thread

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Its the second Forum I use as an unofficial Depeche Mode discussion group, I'm over 200 replies on the other one as well.

Funnily enough I hardly ever post on DM forums. Probably because 10 minutes after posting your comment is followed by another 200 more and your on page 5 of a 10 page thread and my old brain cant keep up. The good thing about Bunnymen forums is people post slowly.
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

I would guess any constructive criticism or good natured joking on the official forum would be frowned upon.

I doubt the webmaster of the official Depeche Mode forum posts snide rebuttals to individual comments and gets butt hurt easily.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

He's a very sensitive soul, I've been banned twice.

Even the webmaster on the VT equivalent (Home) deleted my posts last week. Just because I called somone a "supercilious prick".

Went back and really listened to Playing TheAngel again. It may be time, for me at least, to put the Alan Wilder call to rest.

Listening to playing the Angel, I hear the same intricate interplay of synth sounds I hear on pre- SOF&D.

The difference is that the synth sounds on Black Celebration and Masses and the string sound interplay on SOF&D are similar.

Gahan, maybe with Hillier's help, has this same interplay but with a combination of very retro synth sounds with percussive and I guess what I'd call "glitch" influenced sounds. It makes the songs seem stripped down at first to me because I am expecting the previous synth techniques.

This shows up in Nothing's Impossible.

I also love the jolts of sound that are mastered into flatness on a number of trakcs in both recent releases.

Watched Jools Holland. Some middle aged bunch of blokes played a token new song that starts like Marianne by the Sisters of Mercy and then went into greatest hits mode playing a ten year old single.Cutting edge music? No.Bereft of stadium production thay looked like sad old farts.Double standards on this forum?Too right.

The only problem with your argument Dave is that the Bunnymen haven't produced anything exciting in the studio for a very long time.

And as far as stage presence goes, the band was never "known" for doing much on stage but standing there with the exception of Gahan who looks like a marathon runner compared to Mac.

So, no double standard on that one.

bloke in the makeup looked well though.. hrmmph snigger. And lets face it since wossname had to give up the smack he's got to do something with his time, so running marathons is probably the best thing. i, as not a fan thought is t was OK though. Preferred it to that old dude doing the blues in the style of benny hill and lily allen, sweet as she is is. btw a friend of mine's daughter said her dad was in a local club recently perving over all the young girlies.

And cod-Sisters sounding singles are then? And no-total double standards on this forum.Perhaps if Mac and Will were transvestites they'd get a bit more support around here.Lets face it-why do 3/4 of the people bother posting on here?A lot of poeple sound like snidey students dissecting one and others record collections. The Bunnymen are middle aged and so are we.Grow up a bit and accept they aint going to come out with Transformer.

What a predictable response, I was waiting for it on the text last night.

Sound was abit dodgy at first but they cleaned it up mid way through Wrong. Why shouldnt they do Personal Jesus having never been on Jools before? I thought they were really good.

You cant equate "Big Mac" with Dave Gahan. Mac is playing a pizza joint, DM's first gig on the new tour is outdoor in Tel Aviv (a country they have never played before) to 60,000 people. Thats more people than Mac has played to in the last 10 years.

Having seen both bands live (alot) I'd have to say the Bunnymen in their prime were the greatest live act I've ever seen. However since 1985 DM have grown into the best live band on the planet and the last couple of tours have been breathtaking.

Wow. There are definite issues other than music going on here, no?

There are plenty of middle aged bands putting out worthwhile music. I am judging DM's music by what I hear, Dave, not the videos I saw.

It sounds like Dave is saying, "You are middle aged. Get boring and accept crap like yer supposed to!"
