Of all the bands the Bunnymen influenced

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Of all the bands the Bunnymen influenced

Postby black francis » Mon Mar 09, 2009 1:34 pm

or claimed the Bunnymen influenced them, who are the best or who should the Bunnymen take pride in influencing?

I'm going the easy route and picking Pavement and the Flaming Lips.

Deerhunter are pretty vocal about it. I'd say Coldplay but the thought of it makes me ill. Plus they don't sound much like the Bunnymen.

Courtney Love I think.
Arcade Fire must have admitted it somewhere.

Well, Deerhead then for sure.
I can't hear it in the other bands. Well, Arcade Fire and the vocals maybe? My ear goes straight to the guitar playing when I listen for bunnymen influences.

I want to thank you for posting in my otherwise non responsive thread withahip. You're a good friend.

Good topic!

I just don't hear the influence in Pavement or the Flaming Lips musically or vocally even though I like both of those bands a lot. I'm not saying that a band has to sound exactly like the Bunnymen to have been influenced by them I just don't hear the influence at all. The Lips seem more influenced by 70's rock and Syd Barret lyrics and Pavement seems much more punk DIY influenced.

I would have to go with British Sea Power. No one is going to confuse them with Echo and the Bunnymen but many songs have that Bunnymen rhythm and cadence that remind me of why I was drawn to the Bunnymen in the first place.

I would say they dont have to sound like them at all, - could just be the way they go about things. Can't see it with Oasis at all. Theres a chemical brothers song with that bloke from the flaming lips singing and when I heard it had a bit of a double take because it sounds just like modern day Mac.

If influence mean the band caused you to take up your instrument and start a band then the Goo Goo Dolls. Robby said in an interview that when he started he wanted to sound like Echo and The bunnymen. Rather, they sound like the Replacements.

If you mean a band that heard them and wanted to sound like a certain aspect of them (drums, vocals, guitar) - I will bet the Arcade Fire for vocals, maybe Interpol on guitar?

I think the influence regarding the Flaming Lips is pretty clear cut. Their early music was melodic but still jagged, reminded me a lot of Crocodiles and Porcupine. Their later music was more orchestrated and fuller and The Soft Bulletin especially reminds me of Ocean Rain. Plus their lyrics can be somewhat impenetrable like Mac used to be.

Pavement is less obvious but I'll take their word for it and I always liked their cover of the Killing Moon.

I'd say Arcade Fire is the closest modern band in saound to the Bunnymen. Musically and vocally. The wife thought it "Black Mirror" was the Bunnymen.
