MONROVIA - After a temporary shutdown, Monrovia's skate park is now closed indefinitely because of rampant safety violations and vandalism, city officials said Thursday.
The city initially decided to shut down the skatepark temporarily on Oct. 27, after groups of skateboarders refused to adhere to safety codes, said April Soash, director of community services.
"The skaters became belligerent and challenging to staff, and at that point we determined that it would just be best to close the park," she said.
While closed, the park was repeatedly vandalized, according to Soash. Signs were graffitied, chains and locks were cut, and two cement curbs were taken from the parking lot and thrown into the middle of the park.
To send a stronger message, the city decided to close the park indefinitely, Soash said. "Until the vandalism stops, it will not open," she said. "Even then, when it does open, if they're not abiding by the rules, we may determine to close it again."
Alec Schroeder, 44, has been skating at the park on East Olive Avenue since it opened in 2003 and served on the task force that pushed for it to be built. He usually skateboards there about twice a week and acknowledged that many riders purposefully do not wear the required safety gear.
"There's a certain sense of machismo," Shroeder explained. "If you do a trick and you aren't wearing pads, it's more gnarly than if you are wearing pads." Still,
Schroeder believes the city acted rashly in closing the park altogether.
"They punish all of us for the behavior of a few bad apples," he said.
While safety violations have been an ongoing problem at the park, leading to several temporary closures, more citations have been issued to skaters recently, according to Monrovia Police Department Capt. Jim Hunt.
One skater was arrested recently when he refused to leave the park after being cited for a safety violation, he said. "It's very frustrating when you have a group of kids who are ruining it for everyone else," said Hunt.
