A Decent Light Beer?

Postby black francis » Fri Nov 07, 2008 11:38 pm

Since we're resolved to helpful, feminine and informative topics from here on out and all.

So far Sam Adams Light has been pretty good. Amstel and Heineken not so much. And please no Bud Lite or Miller Lite recommendations.

I mean a low calorie beer but preferably not light tasting. I typically like to drink Guinness, Red Hook and Newcastle but I've always wondered if there's a decent low calorie beer out there that doesn't taste like water.

I'm pretty sure he means light as in lower in calories. Lower calories and lower alcohol will go hand in hand with beer.

Sam Adams Light is 4.05% alcohol and is 124 calories and gets pretty good reviews.
Sam Adams Boston Lager is 4.8% alcohol and is 160 calories so there is a good trade off there with little taste difference.

Some lower alcohol beer technically is what the US would consider light beer but it just isn't called light beer

A 12oz Guinness Draught (the US version) for example, contrary to popular belief is only 4.0% alcohol and 125 calories which is roughly the same as the Sam Adams light.

I got some of this from here:

http://www.realbeer.com/edu/health/calories.php and http://www.wastedcalories.com/beer.html

I think everyone needs to do some research and report back here.

Thing is - in drinking establishments around here, guinness is served in a 20 oz imperial pint. Sam Adams light still comes on a 12 oz bottle. So it's not a good head to head comparison

Right those are 12 oz comparisons but ounce per ounce it's still the same. Most people think Guinness, because of it being dark I guess, is high in alcohol and calories.

So you mean I shouldn't have gotten drunk off those two Guinness in NY?

I saw you do that but I figured I'd ride it out, see where things led.

That must have taken some effort. A wine cooler and a donut maybe?

But not one of those hipster iPod or Target ones with the cool music and art school graphics. More like a capri-wearing-soccer-Mom-with-a-mop-staring-at-the-camera-with-that-concerned-look kind of commercial.

So what about that beer?

Man stay away from that Blue Moon. It's 171 calories!
